Quadra/Centris 650 -- boot from external SCSI

Hi

I recently purchased a BlueSCSI device. I have placed a system 7.5.5 image on a exFAT SD card and installed that in the BlueSCSI.

When I connect the BlueSCSI to the internal SCSI connector (was previously connected to the internal HDD), I am able to boot successfully.

However, when I connect the BlueSCSI inside an external HDD enclosure, and connect via an external SCSI cable, it does not boot.

- I am using SCSI 0 inside the SD card, and I have the external enclosure also set to id 0.
- I can see the BlueSCSI is getting power in the external enclosure as the red light is on.
- The external enclosure has a terminator mounted.
- The mac boots to the point where it has a question mark inside a disk symbol.

Any hints on how to get this working?

Just to clarify:

Internal scsi has no devices connected. BlueSCSI is on external, set to ID 0, and has termination?

Yes, that is correct.

The external enclosure has a terminator mounted.

Remove the thing that's different.

Sounds to me like the machine is confused because there is no internal device present, and is not quite ready to welcome that external stranger….

System Folder is ‘blessed’? Can you boot from a floppy and check? Also, try setting the startup disk using the Control Panel on the external device while booted from floppy.

I've had this before and the external SCSI port needed cleaning with contact cleaner. Do any other external SCSI devices work?

Could also be a termination issue.

I know you said the BlueSCSI is the only device, but this sure sounds like an internal termination issue. Does your Mac have the internal CDROM by chance?

If it does, then you need something internally with a terminator as well. If not, perhaps set the BlueSCSI to ID 1 or something just to see.
