Powerbook Duo Battery Pack types and compatability

Hey All,

I rebuilt a test pack for my 2300 and, although it is charging it will not power the machine. it shuts down immediatley when disconnecting the external A/C adapter.

Are the battery types not interchangeable between Duo versions?

I have two packs. One is a model #M7782 and the other is a #M1499

I reebuilt the M7782 pack and I know this is a Type one pack used in the PowerBook Duo 210/230 series originally. Will this pack not work in a PowerBook Duo 2300c?

And is the DS2400 DALLAS SEMI Memory Circuit important? I assume this is used to identify the battery pack type.

Way back I had a Duo 280 and my Dad had a 2300 we had four batteries between us that we just shared and never had any issues. At least one of them was a Type 1 as had a 230 at one point since that's when he bought the Duo Dock. The battery I recently rebuilt is a type 3 and I did keep all electronics intact. I didn't fully stop using the 2300 until the 12" G4 came out.

Thanks for the info. Might be my powerbook then. I wonder how crucial that like ID component is. I ownder if you were to just supply 12V to the far ent terminals if it would boot normally. Mine doesnt.

I opened the 2300c up and set my bench supply to 1.6A / 12v and connected to the battery terminals direct and it would not boot. Then connected the ID chip and it booted right up.

Finished my pack. Used ternegy 2000mah AA nimh and get 2 hours at full discharge. Now I need to figure out how to replicate the serial off the DS400 so I can make more.

Great work! Now if only the PB500 series batteries had as simple electronics. I had four batteries but the corrosion was so bad in all but one had a salvageable smart board.

Ahhh. Bummer I don’t have one of those anymore to even try. I had a 540c but sold it a while back. Yeah those smart chips are a big hurdle to get through. The next one on my list is the Pismo / Lombard.

In these duo packs, they’ve got a DS400 in them that had a unique customer ID and serial number i then that the PowerBook reads and if it’s not a matching ID, it won’t boot off the battery.

I found some info online on how to read this 64 bit ID using an arduino. But haven’t found a solid way of emulating a DS2400. There’s some forums talking about doing it with a pic chip and some on how to with an arduino but one problem is there’s barely any room at all in the pack.

If I could crack this hurdle I’d make some more…
