I've got a problem with a rebuilt battery pack where after a few minutes of charging it gives the error that the charger is outputting too high.

I rebuilt the battery with four NiMH batteries with solder tabs using these instructions.
Once assembled I got 2.54v from each pair (I forgot to measure the voltage of each battery before I soldered them together.)
With NewtTest I see the charging voltage is 6.30v@1.676A.That current looks high. Is it? After the error I see it as 7.32v@0.004A. Which looks very low? The temperature looks OK so I guess it's not triggering the polyswitch (that reduces the current right?).


The charger appears to be a genuine Apple Newton 9W one.
I read on this forum thread from some time ago to check the resistance between the white wires to check I've assembled the thermister correctly. It is indeed 11.53kOhm. The voltage is 5.0v for the unplugged battery pack.
What am I doing wrong here?
