intro project

ill keep it in mind ;D

currently i am scouring the internet for old softwares to put on teh laptop, I have a few links already but the list is growing. here is the list so far:

python, v1.5.2 - http://ftp.cwi.nl/jack/python/mac/old/

mac C devel - ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Tool_Chest/Core_Mac_OS_Tools/MPW_etc./

internet explorer - http://www.oldapps.com/internet_explorer_mac.php - maybe 4?

software suggestions - http://lowendmac.com/software.shtml

old apple downloads - http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html

anyone else have any good links? :D

[edit] googling for the stuffit expander, i found this!! i havent checked all the links yet, but it looks like an awesome page.

Another good starting point is (the late, great) Gamba's site: home.earthlink.net/~gamba2. There's a large list of links to other sites from which you may download until your hard disk explodes. Many of the links may no longer be valid, but lots of them still work.

There's also the (French) Mac attic: http://www.grenier-du-mac.net/index.htm

Lots of games, and some apps there.

I'm sure others here will chime in shortly with their faves.

An additional technique is to use a time machine, namely the internet archive, http://www.archive.org/ to attempt to access broken links and old copies of websites. Just type your link into the wayback machine and test your luck. The http://www.home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/ site has many previous archived copies, but many of the linked sites lack archiving. Also, before the gamba2 site appeared on Earthlink, it was known as "http://www.accesscom.com/~gamba/" (<-- no longer exists, for copy and paste wayback machine use only!) and the archived copies of this original website contain items not found in the current site.

[very edited post]

i am a little stuck in getting my powerbook online (wired...) which imo is necessary before i try to go wireless with it.

I am not experienced at all with macintosh networking, and after i upgraded to 7.5.3 and looked at the mactcp control panel, i got lost. i put in the name server, but im not sure the domain name was correct, and it wouldnt let me leave it blank. also, it swears by class ip's (obsolete!) so in order to use the correct address (78.*.*.*) i have to use class A, which makes my subnet mask incorrect...

can anyone help ease the pain in this task?

[re-edit] also, i have a sneaking suspicion that the asante micro is only for connecting to other appletalk resources.... anyone have any info on that?

[edit again] i have played around with it a little more, and it seems i need open transport for dhcp. i now think that it may be easier to do manual ip config between my mac and my wireless bridge, and have my bridge handle dhcp and such.

however, i tried to install open transport, and it says i need 5 MB of RAM. I have 4 MB installed, and RAM Doubler installed, but i didnt actually *install* ram doubler, so i figured maybe thats why it didnt recognize 8 MB. in any case, i turned on virtual memory, and it still didnt want to install. is there any way to trick the installer or smth to get it installed?
