External FW burner

My G3 iMac is running Tiger OS X from an external FireWired drive.

The G3 has a built in CD only reader/burner.

I connected an LG external FireWire burner to the G3 but

when i load the external FW burner with a prerecorded/burned CD or DVD it does not show up on the desktop and accordingly the G3 does not see the external burner.

I thought that Tiger would have the drivers built in to mount a CD/DVD from an external FW burner. That same external FW burner works with an intel iMac and SnowLeopard.

What to do please to use this burner with the G3 iMac ?

Macguy,

You may need to "patch" the driver, in order for it to work under Tiger. I'd recommend trying this. I've used it on my Pismo under OSX Panther with a tray-loading Combo drive in the expansion bay. It did exactly as it said after I patched everything. Be sure to read through the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the website before using it.

When I tried to apply the patch burn installer by starting up in Tiger and then Jaguar the installer did/could not see the external firewire burner.

Must be some firm ware glitch or missing extension for that burner and OS Tiger and OS Jaguar.

Will put on my Safari jacket and boots and go a hunting for a LG burner firmware or extension required to be installed to OS 9, or Jaguar, or to Tiger.

Would appreciate help/advice please.

Here is an excerpt from the FAQs under Jaguar (OSX 10.2.x) installation and PatchBurn 1.1:

Q: I can not find my drive in the right list. Which one should I choose?

A: Keep in mind: the right column shows a list of drivers already installed in your system. PatchBurn 1.1 replaces one of theses drivers. You should select the last entry beginning with the same vendor name your drive is from. If your drives vendor does not appear in the right list, read the next question and answer:

Q: I can not find the vendor of my drive in the right list. What should I select?

A: You have to apply two patches. Do as follows:

- start PatchBurn

- open the "experts mode" by clicking at the little triangle in upper right corner

- select your CD writer in the left column

- select the entry "MITSUMI QPS" in the right column

- click on "patch vendor name" in the experts mode (this is the first patch)

- select "MITSUMI CR-487ETE" in the right column

- click on "Patch" (this is the second patch)

- restart your Mac

- you're done!

I believe the above also applies for Tiger and PatchBurn 4.x.x, but verify on that.

Have you tried connecting any other firewire device to see if the port itself is working?

check the firewireport (firewire connected to an other mac) by starting up the G3 in target disk mode

(in target disk mode you cqn use the dvdwriter of the connected computer)

setup a small network, transfer the data to an other computer to write DVD

That may be true (never tested that theory) but I have a firewire DVD burner (BusLink case with LG Burner) that I use as a DVD reader. I have connected it to many different iMac G3s to install Tiger (350-500mhz models) and never had an issue with the iMac reading from the drive. Since he is only trying to get the iMac to see and read a disc, not burn, then I figure that something may be up with the port itself.

As you no doubt know the said iMac G3 has two firewire ports. I am using one port for the LG burner and the other for a external firewire hard drive that has OS Tiger. I have switched those two devices on those two ports and the external hard drive always shows up on the desk top each time. I have also plugged in another external firewire drive and it also shows up on the desktop . Therefore assume the two ports are OK. ( Not daisy chaining although tried that and both hard drives show up but not the LG with a prerecorded CD in it's tray . )

I am rereading the FAQ for Patch burn and will make a set of notes for the steps i have taken so that i can explain more clearly why at this time i can't seem to make it work.

Incidentally I do want to use the LG to read and write to DVD or CD.

Also note that the internal iMac G3 drive has both OS 9 and Jaguar.

I am at a loss as to why i can't get this LG burner to work with this G3 iMac.

When I boot up into Tiger and try to install patch burn there is a message that no patch is required. And when I try to "uninstall" the message is there is nothing to uninstall.

The same results when i boot into Jaguar and try to uninstall or install the patch.

The burner works in a G4 and also in a iMac (2009 edition).

Looks like i will have to remove the CD RW and install a RW DVD/CD burner.

I have a Pioneer DVR-110D that was removed from a previously owned G4.

Any thoughts/suggestions/warnings on that move please ?

Wait. You say you have a G4? What type, a Power Mac, iMac, etc.? If one of the first two, try installing the drive inside the G4 machine, run OS X and then try applying the patch. I'm saying this just in case Patch Burn isn't playing nice with external burners.
