Youtube on Flash 7 / Mac OS 9!

I just managed to get Youtube working in Flash 7!

This only works on videos with 360p I think, and it doesn't sync very well, but that could be my hardware. But if I set the Quality to Low and if I let the movie download for a while, it's looks a little better. Also, most music videos don't work because you get an error about protection sometimes.

Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/embed/l6jsYjPOya8 (this link also works on Mac OS 9).

Normal Youtube link:

(this link doesn't work on Mac OS 9). Sorry for the lag, but we all know screen recorders and older hardware aren't a good combination, but I also didn't want to make a stupid shaky movie, you know.
As you see in the first link, I changed watch?v=l6jsYjPOya8 in embed/l6jsYjPOya8, which makes it work in Mac OS 9.

Still, the best method is to download these movies and to enjoy them in full framerate, without lag and such. I just wanted to show that it's still possible to watch these videos.

Nice find. I might work this into the Classilla FAQ, although I don't use Flash on OS 9 myself (I don't trust it, and I despise Flash anyway).

My iBook G3 last played a YouTube video about four years ago. It will be great to try it again.

How much RAM are you allocating to Classilla for this?

Also, good to see another 4 Strings fan on board. Anyone else miss Vanessa van Hemert's vocals as much as I do?

Not really much, 80.2 MB or so. It is already a miracle that Flash, the memory eating-monster works with so little RAM :p

Lol, I'm sorry to dissappoint you, but I'm not really a 4 Strings fan, I was just searching for music I could play without WMG or EMI errors, and which is 360p  However, I like the music itself.

FTR, 80 is the standard allocation for 128MB of RAM or more. You can of course add more -- Classilla will greedily consume it. :I

Well that works, ... strange!

But fine, I was very angry when YT dropped Flash7 support.

Now what Cameron could do for us is a "YT Window" with exact 360 pt size. I found out aligning sound/video is as better the less the MacOS 9 has to interpolate the video. I suggest "New/Navigator 360pt Window" Edit: or better klickin and "Open in new 360pt Window"

You used to be able to play YouTube on the VERY last build of Flash 7 for OS 9. Without hacks. I think it was "r73," released around 2005, or something. You have to hunt around for it, as it wasn't well known. I posted this info on the LEM OS 9 list about a year or two ago. I never tried it in Classilla, but it worked in WamCom.

It plays like TOTAL crap on a G3 though. The video is, at MOST, 5 fps, but the audio is okay. I've been told a G4 is only marginally better. It was serviceable for things like listening to music and audio commentary, but you can pretty much forget watching YouTube *video* in OS 9 in its native format.

A online converter is probably the way to go.

Somebody, possibly Cameron, suggested it might be possible to port Gnash to OS 9.

Since that link was posted: I should point out there is a program called icWord that will open docx in OS 9. But the online converter will work too.

Well, John, r73 was ok until last year. It did a quite good job for years. I could watch nearly every Flash contetn if I gave the browser the possibility to loade completely before playing at my G4 800 (PM 9600). It must have been April or something when YT switched to Flash 9 for the normal page. but r73 did not work after the problems at YT occured (except the hack sometimes).

FYI, here is the history. With Flash Player 8, Macromedia discontinued support for older OSes like Win95/NT4 and classic Mac OS. But they recognized there were people still using these OSes and so they continued to release security updates for Flash Player 7. There was a technote called "Flash Player 7 for older operating systems" that provided the links to download them. In the case of Flash Player 7, these stopped after the Flash 9.0.115 release. Adobe then did the same thing with Flash 9 when they released Flash 10 that dropped support for older OSes again. Now they have released Flash 10.2, I wonder why they didn't release security updates for Flash 10.1 for older operating systems.

At least for PowerPC, Adobe told Mozilla that PPC 10.1 wasn't vulnerable (but that could simply mean it's not exploitable -- it may still have the bug in question). Or, Adobe doesn't give a rats, which is probably more likely. :p
