... or the 20" LCD I got for free, though it is a Dell.
Dell's LCDs are fine. They actually use the same panels as Apple, and you get additional connection options.

Why are second-hand Apple panels so expensive, I wonder? The later ones (G4-matched, like the one at the top of this thread) seem to often sell for as much as a new non-Apple display, despite most people saying that the Apple ones are no better!

Mine, for example has 4 input sources. I don't have a problem with the monitor at all... it just hurts my Apple fanboy image a bit when people come over and see Darth Vader's monitor on my desk. No one used to comment on my 20" Mitsubishi DiamondTron, but EVERYONE has something to say about the Dell.

You're paying for the brand. It's a bit like clothing really, people will shell out hundreds of pounds for the latest thing from Gucci or CK when you can buy the same things (without the label) from your local ASDA for a fiver. This is may be an extreme example, but Apple is certainly a "fashionable" brand these days and some people will pay over the odds for something with the Apple logo on it, even if there are better alternatives available for less.

In a lot of people's cases, you're also paying for the look of the brand too. It's funny, because as I get older I can tell that my priorities are changing.

Back in college, I'd spend a couple grand on a nice home theater system, just to spend twenty bucks at Home Depot to buy cinder blocks and wood for a makeshift entertainment unit to house it in. These days I'll spend a couple grand on a nice entertainment unit, and then think about the electronics to go in it.

Anyway, although a black LCD looks better on my current desk than an Apple display would, you better believe that I'd shell out a few hundred extra for the Apple if I thought the reverse were true.

$57 shipped for any 15" LCD, let alone an Apple, is a very nice buy!
I won't tell you about the time I got two fifteen-inchers for nothing then... }:) (though they are only the very very old Apple ones)
Wow, that beats me. Best I ever got was a 15" Envision LCD for $2. It was a great monitor, though, and after using it for a few months I sold it for $60. [8D]
