Shiva Etherport II SE info needed

Does anyone have a manual for the Shiva etherport II SE card? I am trying to get it working on my SE. The card that the ethernet cable plugs into has a DIP switch with 4 switches. I do not know what they control or what positions they should be in.

I can ping the machine, but I can't connect to it with it running Netpresentz. So close, but yet so far. I have MacTCP 2.06 and I wonder if the issue is my router not set up properly for it having a static address or something.

I suppose at only 16 combinations I could just try them all!

Thanks for any info.

Good question, I've never touched any dip switches on the board, but I have used the slider on the back plate to select between AUI and BNC connectors.

Greetings,

Thank you for purchasing a Shiva EtherPort card. This file explains critical information about the EtherPort drivers. The installer on this disk will install the correct driver on either the Mac SE, SE/30 or Mac II family. Upgrade information and detailed installation instructions are contained in the Release Notes file, also on this disk.

________________

BEFORE INSTALLING DRIVERS

Before installing the EtherPort II drivers, quit out of all applications. If an application is open during installation, the installer will warn that an application is open and to quit from the installation process.

If any anti-virus software is running, such as Disinfectent, Virex or SAM, it is essential

to disable it before installing the EtherPort II driver. FAILURE TO DISABLE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE MAY RESULT IN CORRUPTING THE SYSTEM FILE. To avoid corrupting the system

file, scan the disk with the anti-virus software and then disable the software according to manufacturerÕs instructions. Once the software has been disabled, please proceed with the EtherPort II driver installation as described in the Release Notes.

Shiva FastPath users should be aware that the current FastPath Manager and the new

EtherTalk drivers are not fully compatible. Shiva is currently working on a version of the FastPath Manager that will be fully compatible with the new EtherTalk drivers. The new FastPath Manager is available from Shiva Technical Support.

_______________

INSTALLATION INFORMATION

The EtherPort II drivers make use of the Apple Installer version 3.2. It will allow installation on the active start up disk without booting from a separate disk. Once all open applications have been closed and anti-virus software has been disabled according to manufacturerÕs instructions, the EtherPort II drivers may be installed by clicking on the installer icon (NOT the installer script). Then click on the Install button.

The Customize install option should only be used when installing to a drive other than the active start up drive. If custom is selected, the option key can be held down to toggle the install button to a remove button.

If the EtherPort II driver is being installed on a Macintosh IIfx, please install AppleTalk version 56 on the system as well. Without AppleTalk version 56, the IIfx will crash when swapping from Built-in to EtherTalk in the Network function of the Control Panel. Once the system has been rebooted, the system and drivers will work. If a copy of AppleTalk version 56 is needed, contact Apple or an authorized Apple Dealer.

When installing the EtherPort II drive on an AppleShare file server, follow the special instructions detailed in the Release Notes, also found on this disk.

If the EtherPort II files are being installed from an electronic package, please follow the instructions detailed in the Release Notes, also found on this disk.

UPGRADE INFORMATION

ETHERPORT BOARDS WITH THE INTEL CHIP SET

The driver which comes with this board is not designed for EtherPort II boards with the Intel controller chip. If the older, full length EtherPort IIi card is installed, please use the separate EPIIi package to install the driver, available on the Shiva bulletin board. This System 7 compatible driver will allow the NuBus Mac to run under System 7; however, virtual memory and 32 bit cleanliness are not supported with this driver.

Three options exist for users of the EtherPort IIi Intel Board. The first option is a software upgrade. The software for the EtherPort IIi Board is available for free from the Shiva bulletin board. This software is System 7 compatible; however, it is not compatible with Virtual Memory nor is it 32 bit clean.

To upgrade the hardware, call Shiva Technical Support for a Return Authorization number and send the board, along with a check, money order or purchase order for $150 to: Shiva, 56 Rogers Street, Cambridge, MA 02141. Boards returned to Shiva without a Return Authorization number can not be accepted.Shiva will send an EtherPort IIn card as replacement for the EtherPort IIi card. This applies to all EtherPort IIi cards, even those previous to revision 2323.

If an upgrade is not desired, but the board is previous to revision 2323, Shiva can repair the board to eliminate the known problem of zones disappearing on long length cables. Call Shiva Technical Support for a Return Authorization number and send the board with a check, money order or purchase order for $100 to Shiva, 56 Rogers Street, Cambridge, MA 02141. The board will be repaired and will work under System 7 software; however, it will not be 32 bit clean nor will it be compatible with Virtual Memory.

I can ping the machine, but I can't connect to it with it running Netpresentz.
1. Can you ping from it, ie, running MacPing?

2. Can you run NSCA Telnet from it and connect to another host?

3. Can you run fetch and connect to another host?

4. Does appletalk/ethertalk work?

I think that it is working, else you shouldn't be able to ping (and get a reply I am assuming) the box.

Hi Gary,

I have been struggeling with this card for a long time too on my SE. I never got the UTP / RJ-45 port working. However I had an 10Base5 (thick Ethernet) to RJ-45 converter which I use now. This works perfect!

Now about your problem.....

But you write that you can ping the machine. Well ...in my opinion it means you have a network connection and everything should work fine. But are you sure the result of the ping is OK? I agree with porter that you should test the things he suggests. Like doing a telnet session, etc. You could also install a web server on it and try to connect to its IP address (the IP adress of your SE). In this case a simple TCP/IP configuration is used. Give your SE a IP address in the same range as your other local computers and you can connect to your web server.

Update. I have done so many things I can't remember, but here is the current status. All DIP switches are off on the card. MACtcp 2.06 is installed and I have the opendns server id's set up. I can ping from the SE to google.com and it returns fine every time. I can ping my PC, but it fails sometimes. I can ping the SE from the PC and it works fine every time. I set up sharing, a user, etc on the SE but when trying to connect with Filezilla it errors out. MACtcp throws an error and I have to restart it before I can try again. I can sometimes connect to it by manually connecting from the PC. The connection between the PC and SE is flaky.

I installed Netpresenz, and it seems to fare a little better. With filezilla, if the connection is lost, it retries and Netpresenz does not fail. So, I have been able to transfer files over to the SE from the PC although it takes a while. I moved both SE and PC to the router instead of the switch-same. I moved both to the switch-same. I think my router is getting ready to fail though, as when the antenna is on it has taken to emitting an annoying high-pitched buzz that it never made before. Also it freezes sometimes and I need to reset it so that is not making testing any easier! I will be getting a new router soon, so there really is no point testing further until that is replaced.

I am sure I have something configured incorrectly. I do have some more testing to do though, so I will update when I have more info.

Thanks!

Gary

I set up a Classic with an Asante SCSI Ethenet Adapter. I had no issues with my intranet (which you seem to be having) but had major issues getting from the Classic to the Internet. Mactcp doesn't respond properly to QOS packets. Here is a posting I made to Applefritter:

I finally made a big step forward with my mac classic. The bottom line is to co-exist with modern ISPs, mactcp needs to be updated. I ran into a number of issues I thought I should share.

1. mactcp 2.06 needs to be patched to become mactcp 2.1. Just search the web for mactcp 2.1 and you will find the patch.

2. You need a clean copy of mactcp 2.06 to use the patch.

3. The patch may fail with error code 50 right near the end. Not sure why but it seems to be a non-issue.

4. Ignore some university websites that say you need a 68030 Mac or system 7.x. The patch works with my classic running 6.07.

5. If you want to keep your orginal mactcp file move it out of the system folder. I made the mistake of keeping a "copy of mactcp" in my system folder. Since "c" comes before "m", the system was loading the older non-patched version of mactcp.

So far I can use fetch, eudora, and internews with the patch.

Mike
