Replacement Power Supply in Quadra 605

I found that the original adapter that AEChadwick designed didn't seem to be suitable for TDK PSUs. Or at least, I couldn't see how to make it work. I designed a new version (my first 3D printed part that I actually designed - woo!) that addresses that, attached for anyone else to use and abuse. The new PSU is working a treat so far.

I've printed in PLA, so it'll be interesting to see if I have issues with heat and plastic droop. It effectively hangs the Meanwell PSU upside down, from the top of the old PSU metal housing.

I just think it's great there's a modern replacement which is coincidentally an almost perfect fit. I've had this half-fixed TDK unit for ages now which would randomly just go into protection and shut down, even after a recap. Now it's a rock solid replacement that fits perfectly in the original case.

Good question about the monitor. I picked it up (and a second one) in a junk shop a while back. I'm certain it comes from a kiosk at a betting agency due to the stickers on the back, but its not really branded from the manufacturer. It's a 19inch 1024x768 panel with a touchscreen digitiser (not tried that yet) encased in a solid lump of brushed aluminium - it weighs a tonne. Sadly it had no stand so it's just propped up there, but it does have VESA holes in the back of I wanted to mount it properly.

I’ve sourced some of the Meanwell RPT-60a power supplies in an attempt to properly restore the collection of LC Pizza Box Mac’s I have.

With the Meanwell PSU, there are pins and connectors for the AC input end and for the DC side that is the output end.

I’d like to just strip the wires from the power switch and put a connector on, and strip the wires from the DC side that are on the PSU end of the wiring harness that goes out to the board. I then want to be able to just plug in the connectors on the AC side and the DC side into the Meanwell connectors without modifying the Meanwell at all.

Can this be done? What would I use? I was thinking DuPont connectors.

this is a great idea, non-destructive edits are best.

the connectors on the Meanwell board are JST VH, get some maybe with leads already on and splice onto power switch etc.

I'm just curious about the success of this MeanWell power supply in the LC 475/Q605. The manufacturer rates the 5v at 4.0amps, and the LC475 power supply specs for 4.75a on 5v. Is this a problem?

My 475 is an upgraded older LC (an official offering) and actually has a lower power PSU anyway and I happly use it. I'm not too worried in this instance. I only have an ethernet PDS in it, although it is overclocked.

@slomacuser is using a meanwell in an overclocked 475.

I need to sort one for myself and my dad but haven't got around to it yet.

That is what we're saying. Mine was originally sold as an LC II and upgraded to a 475, so it has the older PSU. Some LCs have a 3.75A PSU, and some have a 4.75A PSU.

So you're saying that 4amps on the MeanWell is enough for an original power supply that had 4.75amps?

I'm saying my personal LC 475 has a 3.75A power supply, and that if you're not loading yours down with a 2A spinning hard disk and something power hungry in the PDS slot, you'll probably be OK.

Alternatively, if you find something rated for 4.75A or above that fits, is well built and doesn't cost a fortune, I'd be very interested.

I can't tell you what is and isn't OK, I'm not qualified and its your decision what you do with your computer, but the video shows a 4A rated MeanWell PSU maintaining a stable 5V in an overclocked 475, with an 18GB spinning hard disk (0.8A on 5V), while benchmarking.

I run one of those Meanwell PSUs in my 475 that has a spinning drive, CPU accelerator and an ethernet card without any issues.
Not much more that one could load into a 475 except for maybe one of those PPC upgrades. If you don’t plan to do that you’ll be fine with 4amps on the 5V line.

Should also be noted that Meanwell rates them for 4.4A at 5V, so it's not too far off the "heavier" PSUs anyway. I'll definitely give these a look, with their medical rating these should be very robust supplies given their vital use, and may be a safer bet long-term than recapping the old supplies.
