PowerMac G4 (FW800 MDD)

I have a dual boot FW 800 PowerMac (Tiger and Jaguar), it did not come to me with the original optical drive (it has a LiteOn that works ok, but won't boot from installer disks). It has an adaptec (AHA 2930CU) SCSI card in it that I would like to use it to mount an external HD that I have used to make copies of all my HD's on my other 68K Macs and then make copies of those on CD.

So basically..

SE -> ext HD -> FW800MDD -> CD or DVD

Anyway, the SCSI card doesn't show up in the system profiler and of course the external SCSI drive does not mount.

Is there a way to make this card work with the PowerMac, or do I need a different SCSI card and if so, what one?

Is there a better way to do this? I want to end up with a CD that I can use to copy back software onto the older macs.

Ok I have one of these. First thing I found is it has an external connector but there was a sticker on it with a circle slash on it. The internal part works but not the external. I am not sure why but thats the way mine is. My issue is why doesnt profiler see your card at all? I have a bootable drive I think laying around. Just PM me and Ill get it to you. As Uni can tell you I do what I can to spread the wealth. I try to get one of each, everything else is off to a new owner (minus CC's).

I'm really at a loss too (could it be something was not installed in the OS?), but I did notice that internal connector and thought that I might try to hook the drive up that way if I could not find another way to do it. I appreciate the help and the generous offer - PM sent.

Are you sure it's a Mac SCSI card? I have a number of those cards and every one the word MAC somewhere on the sticker on the EPROM. They all also have a sticker on the component side between the internal connector and the external that says "AHA-2930CU MAC"

That is a good point. There were two versions and mine does say Mac rom ver on the side of it. No os install was required. It just worked.

Mine does not...

it has AHA-2930CU on one sticker and a barcode followed by AHA-2930CU, followed by 173100 D followed by 0046 on the other sticker, no 'MAC' at all...

:( I will need to look for a proper Mac one. I see a couple on eBay that are showing the 'mac' on the stickers for the board and on the chip. They look to be about $20 shipped.

$20 for one of those cards is way too much. I have 4 of them that all say MAC on them; you can have all 4 for the price of shipping. PM if you want them. No idea if they work.

I got the cards today, first one that I popped in worked fine (I'll test the other ones later).

Anyway, I was able to mount the scsi drive that I had wanted to see (I did that in 10.2 and copied the three volumes on it to one of the HD's on the FW800) then I shut it down, rebooted in 10.4 and I burned a test CD.

I will have to see if the CD and the files can be seen in the lower OS's or if something was lost in translation...

Thanks everyone for your help and thanks MacGeezer for the cards that helped to move me forward.

Good to hear that at least one of those cards works. If the others work maybe you can sell a couple and recoup the mailing cost.
