PowerBooks & iBooks

Picked up a few little gems from a regular client of ours at work who had some of the remaining Apple hardware from a now defunct Apple Reseller. I didn't know what I was getting until it arrived, but I wasn't disappointed by any means.

PowerBook G3 Wallstreet (Series II)

300MHz PowerPC G3 Processor

128MB System Memory

8.0GB Internal Hard Disk

14.1-inch Active Matrix Display

20x CD-ROM Expansion Bay Module

Battery & Yo-Yo Power Adapter

This machine is in excellent shape for its age and would have been the very top of the line brand new. It boots up into a dual boot between Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X Jaguar 10.2.8. There are no chips or scuffs anywhere on the unit, although it is a little dirty. All four rubber feet are intact. Surprisingly, the battery holds a solid 2.5 hour charge, which is certainly unusual for a battery of its age. On the downside, the very first time I opened the clamshell both of the display hinges broke, which seems to suggest they have been on their way out for quite some time. Luckily I have a replacement set ready that will be going in soon.

PowerBook 3400

240MHz PowerPC 603ev Processor

48MB System Memory

3.0GB Internal Hard Disk

12.1-inch Active Matrix Display

Battery Included, Yo-Yo Power Adapter

This machine is also in quite good shape and was also a top of the line model for its day. The only oddity is that the label below the display reads "PowerBook 5300cs", which the unit very clearly appears to be a 3400 based on the lower case labelling and System Profiler report. The Apple Reseller sticker is still present on the display housing and was used in a service department, so I wouldn't be surprised if the sticker was swapped as a joke at some point. Dual boots between Mac OS 8.1 and Mac OS 9.0.4.

iBook G4 (Mid 2005)

1.33GHz PowerPC G4 Processor

512MB On-Board System Memory (Slot Is Empty)

Unknown HDD (Currently Blank)

12.1-inch LCD Display

Battery Dead, No Power Adapter

This machine is in fairly poor condition as far as iBooks go. The machine is quite chipped around the edges from being opened. Some screws are missing, the AirPort card cage is missing, the memory slot ,is not populated and two of the keyboard latches are missing, but it does power on and it does run. No operating system installed at the moment so I can't verify the full set of details. It does look to be a promising machine for a restore project though, and I certainly did enjoy my old iBook G4, so i'll be looking into this one.

Nice haul!

But the PowerPC G3 laptop is a PDQ, not a Wallstreet, if the clockspeed is 300Mhz as the Wallstreet models only came with 233, 250, 292Mhz processors.

I still have my PowerPC G3 Lombard/Bronze Keyboard 333MHz I've had virtually from new (I'm the second owner and bought it second hand when it was 6 months old) and is fully boxed with all original accessories. They're very nice laptops and I still use mine or have used it recently to run OS 9 applications, as I never installed/upgraded the machine to run OSX.

Cheers!

Top of the Line WS, Top of the Line 3400, and [nearly] top of the line iBook G4...

...very nice!!!

While PDQ is technically the proper name, Wallstreet II is also a generally accepted term.

The PDQ is my personal favorite PB. Mine has run 9, 10.2, 10.4, and Linux without missing a beat.

300MHz of G3 + 1MB of Lightning Cache

All the legacy ports for talking to the rest of the gang

Plethora of expansion bay options

Two cardbus slots

...and a surprisingly sweet sound system!

Oooh. Grats on the Wallstreet. I'm a big fan.

Lowendmac has it as both. I've had one since the Fall of '98, and I've been calling it a Wallstreet for years (for whatever that's worth). If I'm being precise I call it a Wallstreet PDQ.

Correct: "PDQ" was an unofficial name for the second series of Wallstreet G3s. Come to that, even "Wallstreet" was unofficial: everything from the Kanga to the Pismo was officially just called a "Powerbook G3"
