PowerBook 1xx Case Screw Replacements

I've got a PowerBook 140 and 165c and both are missing some of the case screws and I need replacements.

I've searched these forums, the Apple Service Sources, and elsewhere but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer about the exact specs needed for replacements.
  • One source shows T8 6mm. The one remaining screw on my 165c is be T8 6mm. I'm not entirely sure this is the correct length because they might have been replaced before these PowerBooks made their way to me.
  • iFixIt says T10 18mm.
Is the correct size M2.5 or M3, T8 or T10? What is the correct length?

Where in the case is your remaining screw located? I believe they're all the same (unlike on a Powerbook 180 which has a different screen, where the screws that hold the screen in place are shorter that on a PB 140/145/160; not sure about the PB 170 but I guess it's like the 180). The screws that hold the modem in place are different, too (same diameter but shorter).
Since the screws are not that terribly expensive, whyntcha get like 20 of them and use them? Cheers, Karl

The ones I'm missing are the bottom case screws, the first ones you take out from the bottom of the PowerBook to get inside it.

I'm looking to buy more than one, I'm simply trying to make sure I get the correct size. I don't have anywhere locally I can visit to compare to the original so I have to rely on specs to buy them online.

All 4 screws that serve to connect the bottom case to the top case are the same. There is a fifth screw at the back of the machine, near the modem port, which is smaller - do you have that screw?

I just measured one of the grey bottom screws from a Powerbook 145 I have here. It looks like 6 mm to me. See image. I think you're good with T8 6 mm. Good luck!

^ Thank you for the kind offer but I just purchased a bag of them earlier this morning and they will arrive tomorrow.

I also bought some plastic weld and epoxy to fix the broken standoff, then a bunch of replacement caps from Digikey. Both machines still work and there are no signs of cap leakage but I'll replace the caps anyway. Combined with the BlueSCSI v2's I bought a few months ago I hope to have both of these machines in great shape soon.

After that I'll tackle the 520c I bought in November. It also works but I haven't even cracked it open yet. My fingers are crossed that it isn't too much of a mess inside...

I'm really thankful for 68KMLA as a resource to see how others have succeeded restoring their machines. It definitely makes it easier.
