Powerbook 1400C and Asante EN/SC

I got Asante EN/SC recently for my SE. It works like a champ. It has two SCSI DB25 port for daisy chain.

I got a Powerbook 1400C without networking. It has HDI-30 external SCSI port. I wonder if I bought an DB25 to HDI30 adapter. Would it be possible to enable networking in Powerbook. My concern is that Asante driver works for 68K cpu. Does it work for Power PC?

If there is a 68K Driver for this EN/SC adapter, then there is a PPC diver as well, or a FAT Driver with both 68K and PowerPC, and it should work on the 1400 as it would for most other PPC systems. Furthermore, PowerPC can run 68K code though its onboard emulation.

But the 1400 has 2 PCMCIA Slots, can you find a PCMCIA Ethernet Card for it? There are many such cards out there.

The latest version of DaynaPORT, from what I can find, is 7.5.3. This was made in 1993, so there's no chance it has PowerPC code. Plus, all early PowerPC Macs and most later PowerPC Macs, with just a few exceptions, had ethernet ports, so I seriously doubt there were ever PowerPC drivers for it. On the other hand, I'd be very interested to hear if someone gives it a try.

(I mention this because the Asante and the DaynaPort were both made to solve the ethernet problem for the same machines - very early Macs).

A 3Com PCMCIA card should be easy to find on eBay. The drivers are here:

I thought I read somewhere that the Asante drivers had limited support for PPC NuBus based machines, in particular the PowerBook 5300 and 2300. I think the 1400/117 and 1400/133 are NuBus based, but I forget about the 1400/166.

But I would also recommend the PC Card approach. More compact and convenient.

I am not sure about other asante units, but in the case of my Asante Mini EN/SC 10T as far as I know the only driver issue with whatever version I have used is they are not Open Transport compatible. At least, that is the only hangup I have encountered when using mine.

I do not know if the driver was ever updated for OT, but it would be really nice if it was.
