Power Macintosh 6xxx Tower - Like the way the case looks.

Have the 6500/250 with maxed out 128Mb RAM and 7.6.1 and it's f a s t , but it's UGLY. It looks like an mobile fridgerator or huge piece of soap!

I'm putting it for sale/trade soon (not here).

OK, you've finally got me to halfway likin' this thing now! :approve:

If you promise to source a USB Card, Blueberry Peripherals and paint it like the bottom picture to match the peripherals, I've got one to revive our languishing swap deal! [}:)] ]'>

If any Mac ever deserved to be saddled with a RoundRodent, it's the MichelinMac.

That 1950s refrigerator design? I like the 50s industrial look myself, and as the machine looks like something from that era, I like the look of the machine.

What it really does need, though, is a handle on the front that makes it possible to open up. The trouble with the 64/6500 is that it encases so much underneath the fluid 50s exterior in that infernally rigid interior metal box, a box with no obvious means of access (!), so that more or less complete disassembly is needed to get at something as simple as the fan. They are worse to work on than some PowerBooks, and even worse in some ways than the 8xx machines, which is saying something. Yes, you can get at drives from the front, and the logic board from the rear, but try getting at the ps, or even installing an option like a TV card in one of the things, and running the cables to and fro: after an hour of bloodied knuckles you'll know what I mean.

I think it likely that someone then saw the light at design HQ, because my all-time favourites are the outrigger beige desktops and especially the pre-G3 outrigger towers, the 8600 and 9600, that followed right after. With the G3s, the outriggers started to get a trifle too pokey again.

I've got a couple of them, a 275 & 300. The appearance doesn't matter but they're pretty limited in the upgrade department. A G3 card, video card and usb card and that's it.

You forgot the unobtanium Tempo-Trio! I'm going to try the one I have alongside the ATI Rage128/Hardware DVD Decoder Daughtercard in my recased, Sonnetized 6500.

LOVE that blue fridge model, that's a perfect vintage WGS starting point! }:)

I tried the Rage 128 with DVD decoder on a couple of Macs but never had any luck except on the B&W.

I forgot about it but I know I have a Sonnet Tempo Trio around somewhere. It's likely in the box of FW cards. I've got a few SATA cards now so I tend to think more in that direction. Also I've been upgrading drives in my Lacie cases so I have some good sized SATA drives that I can utilize.

I have a lot of external drives so upgrading a drive is a pain. Buy a 4tb to replace a 3tb, the the 3tb replaces a 2tb then the 2tb replaces a 1.5tb, then the 1.5tb replaces the 1tb, then the 1tb replaces the 500gb and that's a day

I hear you, but mostly I don't do hand-me-downs. When I get a new to me computer, I buy it a good sized, brand new HDD and chuck the old one into a box if it has anything on it I might want to move somewhere. When I upgrade a machine I already have, I still chuck the old HDD in the box as a backup of the files I transfer to the new machine.

Some of the drives went bye-bye with the storage room, but I still have a few that are like finding time capsules from one of my previous lives.

Heck, I've got computers that ARE time capsules from previous lives, like PowerDuo, it still has all the bookkeeping records from the business I closed up almost nine years ago on its HDD.

< back on topic >

The Tempo Trio was MADE for these machines . . . and that funny lookin' TAM thing.)

Recently I've found the need for a lot of storage. Money isn't unlimited. Recycling hard drives lets me to do things like putting a 1tb hd in my digital audio where it might normally not get the upgrade. Old hard drives usually get recycled unless there's a good reason not to. I tossed my larger 5400 rpm drives. I kept a few small ata drives in case I have some need for a small drive. So far nothing.

If I want to go back to 1995 to about 2005, that's the era I can do easily. About 1995 is when I bought a CD burner and used it to backup my computers. In 2002 I got a DVD burner. Back then a CD or DVD would usually copy my entire hard drive. Most of the disks are still viable.

I discovered I have another time machine. A number of years ago our user groups BBS SYSOP passed away. Shortly after I got a call that the BBS was down. I said I knew absolutely nothing about First Class BBS software but Fred said that that's ok, come fix it, then we can go for breakfast. I managed to get it going and then took the manuals home. Shortly after I realized I needed something to experiment on without risking the BBS so I made a copy. I'd make a copy of the copy and play around with that. I still have that original copy. Fortunately about a year later someone with a lot of FC experience retired and had time to take over the job. That gives me an idea. Our user group, ApplesBC is going to die in about 3 months. Maybe for the last meeting I'll resurrect the old BBS for one night. BBS has been gone a few years, would any of the older members recall their passwords?

Visually, I love the 9500 case because it has the "fast machine" look of the quadra 8xx while being a bit higher.

However, this case is the worst thing ever to work with! Everytime I open it, I break some plastic inside. Adding some RAM is a real nightmare!

I love the quadra 700 tower as well. I think it's quite original. I would love a version with a vertical CD rom drive instead of the flopy drive. This computer made me dream when it was released so I cannot be objective though. :)

Other than the fact that all those Towers are Platinum, I LOVE that graphic!

Luckily, the 6400/6500 Performas don't make the cut for that selection. Stick one in there and it would be totally out of place. :p

Always one of my favorite pre-blue designs. Classy looking.

But now I want one just to put it next to a Q800 box with a 6100 across the top. Machenge.

OMG!!!! 8-o

. . . suddenly, I feel apologetic about some of the more extreme comments I've made about the appearance of the 6xxx case design.

I like my 6400. I guess the design doesn't work for everyone, but I like the smooth edges and built in subwoofer. Naturally it isn't the most expandable tower, but I LOVE the fact it has IDE hard drive instead of SCSI.

For someone who is supposedly married, you're rather intent on imagining Macs as romantic partners, aren't you?
