Power Mac 7100 PPC 601 CPU package damaged

Someone recapped my Power Mac 7100 with a beautiful set of 20+ tantalum caps. I received the board and assembled my Quadra / 7100 FrankenMac, only to discover a no chime / no boot condition. Re-seated ROM, cache, RAM, etc. and no change, so I pulled the heatsink off of the 601 CPU and found what appears to be a damaged CPU package underneath. Shoot.

He did replace the thermal compound and sent me a photo of it during replacement:

Is the logic board completely screwed?

How was it packaged when it was returned to you? And has it been handled by holding the heatsink? Was it tested after the CPU was repasted?

Apple actually issued a warning notice about this problem with these logicboards as it was a very common problem.

These are super fragile - someone very good at soldering could replace that 601 if you can find one, though it may be easier to find another logicboard.

Board is not toast, but the CPU likely is. You can get a new CPU HERE.
It's of course not super easy to change it, but i'm pretty sure your recap friend should be able to do it. Those CPU:s are in general very fragile.

You need a hot air rework station for that, while you can recap with just a soldering iron.

Yes, without hot air it's not possible, however it is still a QFP-package and not BGA . So, with a hot air station it's definitely doable.

at least it was just a 7100- i lost a 9150/120 board this way...

I got a 6100 board that came complete with this notice.

Didn't help, the CPU die was still knackered.

Ok at first I though it was ok the "waves" on the chip are ok, but, it's dead for sure, it was crushed against the board on the upper right corner, pins are bent like hell.
Right bottom corner has a crack in the chip for sure.

I hope you will manage to get the CPU swapped!

There is so much that can go wrong while shipping, I'm used to ask my accessories to be packaged in a different box after a Plus I recieved had destroyed few keys on his keyboard. It might be better to remove the heatsink while shipping boards without a case especially those CPUs?
