I recently got a Power Mac 9600, which I upgraded with an ATA card and an ATI Rage 128 video card. Today I hooked it all up to install OS 9 but I can't get any video out. I tried two different monitors and I know the video card is a Mac one...What do I do? My B&W G3 also started from scratch and it displayed video just fine. Do I need to use the original video card to install OS 9 and then add ATI drivers?

I understand your problem your power macintosh 9600 is very different from G3 B / W, the card you've put in the ATI 9300 is not compatible with mac os 9, in order to install it you have to use the original video card of 9600.
Sol i followed it can be installed with the application free XPOSTFACTO version 10.2, with perhaps this version (but not sure) you can use your schefa ATI, XPOSTFACTO aha need mac ops 9 to function as a first step, therefore, you have to use tab original video 9600 as mentioned before.

The Open Firmware video "driver" is on the option ROM of the card and provides pre-boot video, there is nothing on the motherboard for PCI cards. Rage 128 cards are compatible with the 9600, pretty sure my ATI XClaimVR 128 worked fine in one of the 7600s I had in the past. Given that OS9 supports multiple monitors out of the box, you should be able to install the stock IX Micro card along side of the ATI card and get video on both.
If the video card was the STOCK OEM APPLE card from the B&W G3, it likely doesn't work in other machines because it was an oddball 66Mhz PCI card.

Rage 128s should work just fine in old world Powermacs. I have a few as backup cards and never have any issues with them.
Some later ATI cards have a bug with old world OF that prevents them to display anything on the screen on the first boot after a PRAM reset.
You have to wait for the machine to boot to the desktop, shut it down and on subsequent startups everything will work as usual.
That bug should not happen with the 128 though.
I have a 128 next to my Radeon 9200 in my 9600 to get a picture on screen right from the first boot, as I have no battery in that machine and PRAM gets reset pretty often.
After the first startup I just disconnect the monitor from the 128 and go over to the Radeon.

If you remove the ATA controller, does the Rage 128 work properly? If so, I'd try both in the bottom three PCI slots. IIRC, the three bottom slots each have a dedicated PCI bus, while the top three slots share a single bus. Sometimes the 9500 and 9600 can present some PCI voodoo as a result.
Also, how do I tell if my Rage 128 is the one that shipped in G3s and Yikes! G4s? The seller said it works in the G3 and PCI G4 but didn't say if it came from one of those machines.

I don't know where the crazy idea that the B&W/Yikes cards won't work in anything but those machines comes from. I've used dozens of these cards in every generation of PCI Mac from the 7200 all the way up to the last PCI G5s. The card is not the issue, especially if it tests good in other computers.
My best suggestion is to shuffle slots. These computers are old-slots get dirty. Also, sometimes my 9600 needs a few tries to put video out through the 9200-I can't say why that is, but it always eventually works.

Don't know where you got that from, but that's flat out false. Mine works fine on all my PCI PowerPC Macs.

Was there ever any luck for a bug fix on the 9200 ROM? Would any of these new ROM parsers help identify the issue?
