Hey all!

I ran across a Performa 640CD a couple days ago at the local Habitat!

I have a few questions though, with the dos card installed in this computer, would i still be able to install an Ethernet card in it? did they make Comm Slot Ethernet cards?

The machine currently has the original Quantum installed in it and I'll be replacing that with a faster and larger IDE drive, it's been a while since I've worked on one of these, so, what version of the Mac OS do you guys recommend? It currently has 7.5.5 on it, but I had os 8.1 installed on my 630 as a kid and thought it worked okay!

Lastly, what do you guys recommend software wise for the computer, I'd like to use it for basic stuff and play some games on it, I've already got some installed, but I may as well put as many interesting things on it as I can!

Thanks guys!

Blake.

P.S: I'm asking these questions because it's been so long since I worked on anything less than a G3!

Yeah, they certainly did make Comm Slot ethernet cards, as long as its Comm Slot 1 (NOT Comm Slot 2! these are designed for PCI based systems) it'll work.

As for OS, how much RAM has it got? Basically, I like to use this as a guide:

4MB: System 7.1

8MB: System 7.5.x

16MB: System 7.6.1

24MB+: OS 8.1

As for software....depends on what you want to do with it really. :) AppleWorks 5 runs well, I'd imagine Office 4.2 should be ok on it, as well as just about any game that'll run on a 68k. iCab runs ok, if you want a web browser...it all depends on what you want to do with it. :)

640CD's rule! It was the first 68k Mac I ever owned. There's definitely room, I have a TV tuner and an ethernet card for it.

The built in 486 was the best feature ever. I played so many DOS games with it back in the day.

I got a Performa 630 DOS and yeah there's space for a TV card, AV card and an ethernet comm slot card if one wanted it. I know since I have all them installed apart from the comm slot card which I actually bought a v2 one by accident. One thing I would be aware of is noisey PSU's. I got another 630 mostly for a new (old) PSU but turns out this has the same freakin' problem. > :(
