Performa 475 howto install 7.5.5

Hello,

I've been interested in all kinds of retro computers for a long time and own some current Apple computers, as well as 8-bit computers from Apple. However, this is the first time, apart from using Shapeshifter emulation on the Amiga, that I want to install a 68k color Mac from scratch.

Here, I have a Performa 475 with a 68040RC25M CPU running at 33Mhz, equipped with 36MB RAM and a BlueSCSI V2.
Additionally, I have a FloppyEmu running the MAC/LISA Firmware connected to the internal Floppy connector.

I want to install version 7.5.5 on this Mac (preferably the German version). Could anyone give me some advice on what is the best way to install this OS and where to get a legal copy of it (some websites with links to Apple are no longer functional)?

Thank you.

7.5.5 was released for free by apple. 7.5.3 was made available for download from their website, as was the 7.5.5 update.

This said, I actually tend to find 7.5.3 more reliable. I'm not sure why entirely, but I prefer it.

Extract the attached onto your SD card.

Edit - sorry, just saw you said the German version.

I'll make you an image, probably faster for me to do than explain it.

OK, sorry, got distracted and put a few free and shareware utilities, games and a MOD player on the image to get you started. Nothing is paid software, don't worry. Sorry it is English software, but with the Utilities, you might need some of them to help you install German language software, so I thought something was better than nothing (and I don't have the German versions already in my emulator, like I had these).

The German for Desktop Patterns is insane!!! "Schreibtischhintergrund"!

To get up and running, unzip the attached file, and copy the extracted file onto your FAT formatted SD card. That should be all you need to do.

Here is a screenshot of what you should get :

Today, I had the opportunity to test the image provided by @Phipli. (Thank you for sending it.)

Although it successfully booted, I noticed that the disk performance was significantly slower compared to my original SCSI Disk, which booted much faster.

In an attempt to assess the situation, I ran some benchmarks using Speedometer, and the results indicated that the disk performance fell below that of a Classic Mac, as illustrated in the attached image.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to enhance the speed of my BlueSCSI V2 Setup in my Performa 475?

Thank you.

Shouldn't be anything near that bad. Verify termination is set correctly, and the BlueSCSI settings aren't in a slow mode. Best to review the BlueSCSI wiki for settings, or ask on their discord as linked from the Wiki.

Try a different SCSI cable if nothing else works.

Also, because I didn't know what you wanted, the install I shared is a universal full install. It will boot faster if you strip out system components you don't need.

BluSCSI has documented expected performance numbers including SCSI driver used on their WiKi page:

I think Realitystorm is correct in that you might be getting performance issues due to your SD card. The top of the site shows a few tips to follow to make sure you are getting all of the juice you can from the BlueSCSI.

Keep us posted if you resolve you issue. I dislike Discord as if you find a resolution on Discord, we (the internet) would be none the wiser and your resolution might be helpful to others.

Good Luck!

The SD Card I use is a "SanDisk Ultra 32GB".

The log file of BlueSCSI says that the hd images are fragmented.
So I followed the orders from the BlueSCSI GitHub page to fix the problem (low-level format of SD Card and copy each image file separately to the SD Card).

However, despite completing the entire procedure, I only experienced a marginal performance improvement, with the Speedometer score increasing from 0.70 to 1.80.

Nonetheless, the system remains notably sluggish compared with my original HDD.
Examining the new logfile it still says that the image files are fragmented.

Any suggestions?

Did you use the formatting tool they recommend?

Yes I used the SD Memory Card Formatter Tool with the „Overwrite Format“ option on.
Do you have another SD card to try with? I am not home currently but I will look at my logs when I get back. I have a 64GB version of the same card you are using and cant seem to recall that error. I will let you know soon enough.

Keep us posted if you have a second SD card to try.

Yes I also used another 8GB SanDisk SD card formated with the same tool.
But I have the same issue.

Just got home, checked my 64GB and Chinese unbranded 8GB card and both do not show that error. Did you use a pre existing image from Macintosh Garden or elsewhere? I usually get a blank premade image and then using Apple Legacy Software Recovery CD on the BlueSCSI, I install whatever OS is needed to the blank image.

I faintly remember getting the fragmented error while using a premade image I found online but I no longer use the image and since I started from scratch it no longer shows the error.

Backup your current install and start from scratch as mentioned above. Then install a fresh OS using the legacy cd. Check if the error persists and if it doesn't, reapply your backup but don't boot from it, simply use it to transfer your files from the backup to the new image.

Let me know how that goes.

The image is a brand new install. It isn't fragmented inside the image, and that isn't what the error means. Plus if it was, you could run a defrag tool on it, but it isn't, so best not to because it will cause wear on the SD card.

Here is the error my SD card had when I was using a premade image, as you can see it was only complaining about SCSI ID # 5:

Hence why I am asking him to try a fresh installation. The file you provided might have been good when you created it but you yourself know that once it left your hands, any number of things could have damaged the image.

His error is also specifically complaining about that one image. Its in the log.txt file he sent.
