Painted 512k Restoration

I posted the link to a painted 512k on CL yesterday. I went and grabbed it today and began accessing the damage. The machine came with the original cary bag and mouse. It also included an optical mouse that plugs into the Macs serial mouse port. 

I powered it up and looks like we have some crt issues. There is a floppy disk in the drive, but it looks like the paint seeped into the floppy drive.

I have sent about the past 30 minutes trying to free up the thick dry paint that had sealed the Mac shut.

I tried using the "high schooler" card but ended up paying $25, but he also threw in a cinema hd monitor.

Last time I saw a thread on paint, it was DOT3 brake fluid that got it all off...

yes, I read the thread bout the spray painted Lisa. This looks to be thick acrylic paint. 

The machine looks scratched up, but that's just the top 2mm paint, the actually plastic isn't that bad.

Hmmm... Is it peelable? I would think not since the plastic is textured.

Wow. I can't believe that someone would do that to a Macintosh 512k! I think that rubbing alcohol might work.

Dunno about anybody else, but I love it just as is!!!!! That graffiti art sucker has more history than can possibly be removed.

Cleaning it up will only make it look worse, all the scratches and dings will stand out like two fists full of sore thumbs. But if you feel the need, try denatured alcohol, it's a pretty good solvent for acrylic paint. I'd wrap it in paper towels soaked in it, stick it in a nice heavy plastic bag outdoors with a small puddle in the bottom, seal it up and then wait a few hours. After that you go with the brake fluid on the marker.

Again, you're never gonna be happy with your cleanup results. Not sure you can even sand out the scratches, and paint it for a FauxProto look from the appearance in your pics. I'll bet more and deeper scratches are hidden under the paint.

With the Apple II and IBM tags and security loop, it looks like it may have been in a school lab from the day it was new. If not, somebody went to some trouble to make it look that way. It almost looks like a prequel to the camo paint job in Hackers.

I have the perfect collectable (Steve Jobs RARE ) 128k. I bought this machine as a users computer, I don't mind if it has a few scuffs. I am thinking about cleaning the rear shell and leaving the cute face plate.

Ive spent the past hour cleaning the machine with hot water and isopropyl. Still need to work on the bottom grill, but overall I am quite pleased.

Great results! It's looking even better than I thought it would. You're nearly there.

I can't really see the cuteness in the bezel (in its current state that is), but if you like it as, that's good for you 

BTW, you should be able to fix the screen issue by adjusting some of the potentiometers on the side of the Analog board, namely R53 (cut off) but if that doesn't work, you'll have to replace the resistor labelled R5 on the logic board (470K, 1/4-watt, 5%).

Im not sure if the screen issue is just alignment. One power the screen gets "fuzzy" and then it straightens out to the image seen in the album. Ill upload a video later tonight.

Did the Mac come with red analog board caps? or was it recapped?

The seller had no clue what it was he just knew it was a "Macintosh", so I highly doubt he would have recapped it.

Powered it up to take a video and it looks to be working perfectly now. The tube probably hadn't fired in years and was just warming up. Glad to have this issue out of the way. 

Tried to pull the floppy drive cage out but the cage/drive is stuck to the front pannel. Wonderful.

The faceplate is beyond saving. The paint wasn't coming off so I mixed some more acetone into the mixture and have discolored the face plate. Anyone have a replacement 128k, 512k, or Plus faceplate?

Did you know how powerful acetone is before you used if? If not, that's scary, always know what chemicals can and will do before you use them. Be careful with that stuff, it can dissolve plastic. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but you REALLY need to know what chemicals will do BEFORE using them.

Ive used acetone before. I was using a 50/50 mix of isopropyl and acetone. The paint was refusing to coming off so I made it a 70/30 mix. This has left some white discoloration.
