OS 7.5.5 Memory Hog

Okay, my second post for today.  This question is straight forward.  I've installed 7.5.5 on my LC475 which has 135,168K of RAM according to About this Macintosh.  The OS uses 131,268K and when I try to open a PDF, there's not enough RAM to display it.  What's going on and how do I put 7.5.5 on a diet?  I tried using the extensions manager to unload some extensions and control panels but then I couldn't open the PDF file at all.

Sounds like you don't have 32 bit addressing turned on.  If you pop into the Memory control panel and switch from 24 bit to 32 bit addressing and reboot you should be all set.

Thank you EvilCapitalist.  You are right.  I turn on 32-bit addressing and now the largest unused block is 130,655K with the OS taking up only 4,345K.  Of course, I have to run 24-bit addressing to use my Apple IIe card but now I know how to resolve this issue.

With Mode32 on the SE/30, you can temporarily boot into 24bit mode by holding down the escape key during startup. Upon next reboot the system will run in 32bit mode.

Maybe there is another key sequence (or the ESC key here as well?) where you can leave the computer in 32bit mode for day to day stuff, but can hold down the key sequence for the occasions where you want to use the IIe card without having to mess with the memory control panel every time. I can try some combinations on my color Classic later today.
