New Resident - ANS 700

I haven't posted much since the forum crash but I got a new toy today, an ANS 700/200. It has some issues but I'm beginning the troubleshooting and hope to have it booting something soon.

Best of all, it was free.

Cool, probably one of Apple largest footprint machines I would think.

Anything special in it?

From my understanding most of those got crushed, not a huge market for the beasts (when shipping is taken into account).

It's really just an IBM RS/6000 with an Apple sticker on, you know :p

There's not hing wrong with that however, RS/6000s are really top-class UNIX machines. I don't get on that well with AIX but if it annoys you too much I daresay most versions of PPC Linux would run on it too.

There was a Radius video card in one of the slots. I'm assumning that someone has tried the old "use a PCI video card and 9500 ROM SIMM" trick to get it to boot Mac OS before. Other than that, just the 200mhz upgrade processor card, a CD-ROM, DAT drive and several hard drives.

It weighs about 20 pounds more than a Daystar Genesis tower, so it is heavy, probably close to a hundred pounds.

Nice score! :) What are your plans for it, once you get it going?
A file server for the Mac side of my network. The current file server is a WGS8150.

YDL has a kernel for the ANS and seems to be the flavor of choice as well as one of the BSD's.

The motherboard looks like a hybrid of the Tsunami from the 9500 class of PowerMac and a RS/6000. Some things are Mac like ADB and Cuda, the non-cascaded interrupts for the PCI slots are very RS as is the on board SCSI and video chip set.

Ooo, I'm a little bit jealous. An ANS would be fun to have for the novelty. :) How many drives can you pack in there?

Except that there is a limit as to what version of AIX you can run on it.

Most RS/6000s have a limit to what version of AIX they can run ;)

For example, my RS/6000 7030 is limited to 5.1L because it requires MCA support, while my 7043 does not so it can run newer versions. Good on that ANS.

Hi - more likely that it was running Linux and the user wanted better video for running X11. That's certainly what I did with mine. The on board video is not well supported by the newer versions of Linux.

Nice find - enjoy your ANS!

PS: Don't forget to check your power bills. I had to turn mine off due to the cost of running it!

Sounds very likely.

As for the power bills, I have a somewhat large house with a pool and a ton of appliances. Our average power bill runs around $7-800 a month. I might not even notice the ANS.

Good grief! When mine is $200 it's too much. Then again I have a smaller house. :)

It's 4500 sqft of conditioned space. Plus Texas has the highest unregulated electricity rates in the US. We are lucky being served by a power co-op or our bill would be 30-40% higher than it is.

You live in the Carolinas too, which is a much cooler climate. We finally got to switch off the airco on Thanksgiving when temps dropped below the high 80's. We have to use the airco almost every month. The downside is large electric bills, the upside is low gas bills for heating. We use more gas knocking the chill off the pool to let the kids swim at Christmas and through out the winter than we do heating the house.

What??? Make 'em get in and tell 'em to LIKE it! You put up with heat the rest of the year, ya ungrateful snots, enjoy the chill while it lasts.

;) :D

Wha?

80's around thanksgiving? I slipped on ice walking home from school today, and you have the AC on?

I hate Ohio.

I'm actually to close to the lake to be in the snow belt, I'm about 1/2 mile away from the lake. About 1 mile away from me is when the snow gets bad.

Though it is cold out now. Not as cold as it will be in a month, but I just have summer in mind.

Nice score on that ANS 700.

I wouldn't mind having one. I'd strip of course and install a more modern Mac inside it's behemoth hull. A beautiful case just screaming ot be packed to the gills with hardware.

Currently it's slightly under 60 degrees in Raleigh, NC. It's been in the 70's frequently until the last couple of weeks.
