My Mac Portable fun

Have completed the recap of a backlit Portable.

The machine boots, sound is good, screen is good, etc. Boots from external SCSI drive.

The issue I'm having is no matter what the application or text box, whenever I type more than 3-4 characters on the keyboard, it either drops to the ROM monitor(?) box ">" or there's a system error "stack collision with heap".

The steps I'm going to take on this are below. If there are other suggestions I'm all ears!

Double check cap work, especially those caps right below the left keyboard/mouse connector.

Swap keyboard to the other connector, swap connector cables, etc. to see if it's that port or the cable.

Substitute a keyboard from my other Portable to see if the keyboard is bad.

Do a completely fresh OS install on a new drive to see if it's some kind of software issue - currently using 6.0.8 with 2MB of RAM in the machine.

Anything else to try?

Hi! I’ve got the exact same problem after recapping my M5126. Try the below methods cos it works for me.

1. make sure your logic board isn’t touching the base of the case due to slight bent. So also make sure your axial caps aren’t too big to cause the board to bend.

2. check both sides of keyboard / mouse / numpad connector for connectivity, they should be coherent. I’ve found around 3 broken trace on mine.

After I swapped out my slightly bigger caps and bridged the keyboard connectors they ran fine.

@glay78 - thanks! I will check those things out - they sound very plausible. I could tell the new axials were a touch larger, but didn't think to check if they caused any deflection/bending of the board.

Hi, what external scsi drive do you use?
I also have a freshly recapped m5120, but the internal drive is as dead as a dodo...
