My first Macintosh

Just about a month ago I purchased a Macintosh SE on eBay for 60 bucks shipped, mouse and keyboard included. Its in great condition besides a small crack in the top right corner of the case (which must have happened in shipping as it wasn't in the pictures on eBay). I powered it on as the seller said It was working but it wouldnt boot. It went from a happy Mac to a :?: Its not a super drive model so I had to wait until I could find some 800k install floppies. For 20 dollars I was able to get a set of system 6 floppies and Your tour of the Macintosh SE floppy. The floppies came yesterday and everything works great. I'll try to get some pictures up late tonight. I took apart the SE earlier just curious about the battery and the caps. I didn't have much time so I didn't take the board out but it was very clean inside. From one of the holes on the side I was able to see the battery which has been replaced. The only problem I found was a penny that someone must have dropped through the fan vent.

Welcome aboard! You'll be all right as long as you only collect one of each type, maybe even keep them is separate rooms . . .

. . . otherwise they can breed faster than Tribbles. 8-o

Oooh, that's a hard drive model. I have one with the internal hard drive and one with dual floppies. The hard drive model also has a MicroMac 68020 accelerator with math co-pro. I have no idea how I managed to get lucky enough to get that. The seller didn't even have it in the description, so he may not have known it was in there.

Although I suspect that the hard drive may be another of those dying Quantums, or at least one with corrupt system software, judging from this comment:

It went from a happy Mac to a :?:
Is it true that, without a floppy inserted, the machine makes a sound like something stopping (there's a noise which gradually drops in pitch until it's gone completely and all you can hear is the fan)? In that case I'd copy everything I can off of the hard drive and make backups of the machine's system software and any installed applications before the hard drive dies completely.

Thing is OOM, it sounds like he just reinstalled the OS. I would recommend though, that you backup those floppies you bought. You never know, age might get to them (which reminds me, I have to make backups of all those installer disks I got almost a year ago).

For games, you can install them on the hard drive, but I would recommend keeping a copy on a diskette. Of course, make sure they are legally obtained. ;)

I have DD floppies on the way soon. Found them new in box on eBay cheap. Im not so sure what was up with the hard drive as it would attempt to read but then the light would flash a few times and then it would go to the question mark. The person I bought it from said it was working before he shipped it. At least every thing is working now. :)
