Macintosh Portable Conquest

Hey all,

This is my first officially posted conquest. Although I've had more in the past, this one is especially cool to me. I got a EBay Local Pickup Macintosh Portable for about $5. It was missing a handle and the drive bay side of the cover, but everything else was untouched - it even came with the internal modem! Anyways, I bought a new battery and adapter for it and tried booting it up. After a couple errors, I checked to see if I had leaky caps. Not to the surprise of anyone, I did! I cleaned it up quickly with alcohol and a toothbrush, and although the speaker still doesn't work, it boots off of HD! I've included some pics of my progress, and am likely to get it recapped.

So you are the lucky one! Glad it was someone here! And glad it works! I am still working on mine - off to the oven it goes next for a reflow.

Yeah, I got the LA local eBay listing. I live in San Diego but the drive was worth it. It actually didn't work at first, I had to take it apart and clean the capacitor goo with alcohol and a toothbrush first. Only a temporary fix though.

Yeah I'm 50-60 miles east of Downtown LA. If I would have seen it, I would have bid. I am deffinetly glad to see someone here got it. Congrats!

Thanks! Of all the Macs I've worked with, this one is the most temperamental. Even a 512k that has four years on this thing is easier to repair and understand. Sometimes it boots, sometimes it doesn't. The keyboard is finicky (but the Alps keys are so good!). Overall: this one's going to take a while.

the more you mess around with it with bad caps the more likely you are to screw it up…

i suggest turn it off and cap it your self or some have me or someone else do it.

I would recommend you get it done by Uniserver and save time and money. He recapped my Macintosh Portable and now works flawlessly, he does an A grade job in no time at all. I would defiantly recommend you get it recapped by Uniserver and make your sad mac xx( happy again :)
