Granted, this isn't PPC, but there is no area for Intel I can see, so here goes...
I have two replacement LG DVD R/W drives in my Mac Pro. Both are the same. Both are SATA drives connected to the ATA bus via ATA to SATA adapters. Never had an issue with these with HDs or otherwise. The drives work fine reading: can start from them, read, install programs, anything. However, I attempted to burn a disc image to a physical CD (under OS X 10.6), and the machine totally locks up. No Force Quit menu, not even a keyboard restart will work: only holding the power button down will shut down the machine. Nothing is written to the disc: I can visually and via the machine itself verify that the disc is still blank. When I try to write it via Disc Utility, the drive spins up as if it is about to write it, but then the machine freezes within 30 seconds.
I am not very good with this sort of UNIX-based troubleshooting. Not sure if it is the drives themselves, something in between, or an OS error. Below is a screenshot of the drives in System Profiler.
