One thing I should add to my 7-step post is that OS updates may overwrite whatever older version AppleFileServer.app you use. It's unlikely Apple updates that app with every OS update, but I cannot say if the OS update process would remove it or not. So while a bit troublesome, you may wish to move the Lion version back
before you do the OS update, or at the very least check to see if your old version app is still present
after the OS update.
And now I wish to formally apologize if some of my remarks upset folks here. It is my heart's desire to get along with everyone, but I occasionally fail at that. In all honestly, I can be an inconsiderate imp at times. And while my "Fine Print" was made half jokingly, let it not be misconstrued -- I certainly do not advocate theft. Apologies to
bbraun, to
Trash80toHP_Mini and to our forum moderators, who do an excellent and painstaking job of keeping us on the right track. I also wish to thank
protocol7 for mentioning the freely downloadable OS 10.5.8 Combo Update and Pacifist.
All said, I consider this thread a success. My opening post was written in search of way to restore networking (without resorting to FTP) between legacy OS 9 Macs and modern Macs running Lion. And thanks to your kind participation and suggestions, especially that of
bbraun, we have achieved that.
May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a glorious 2012!
