Mac IIx

Added a Mac IIx to the collection. I haven't  got it yet, but I'll post some pics when it comes in.

As far as I can tell, it's all there except a hard drive. It's going to need some work.

The IIx will probably need a recap and is somewhat picky on memory. They are nice machines for running OS 6 or 7.1. Did yours have any cards installed ( no built in video)?

It has the standard Mac II video card. I know for sure that it doesn't power up, so I'll start with a recap on the logic board, the power supply. I'd like to run system 6.0.8 on it, so I can get my Mac286 card working.

The Mac IIx won't power on if the PRAM batteries are dead (there are two of them, and they must both work in order for the machine to power on, assuming there are no other issues, like a failed power supply).

I have some spare IIx parts (including a power supply), if you need. Just let me know and I'll see what I have.

Received the IIx today.  Case is in great shape. I though it had a video card, but there wasn't one. No ROM, No RAM, No hard drive. One floppy.

Missing the slot cover for the other floppy.

Leaky caps for sure-- you can see the spot around C12, next to the ROM socket.

I have an extra SE/30 ROM, which I think is the same. I seem to recall reading that the IIx, IIcx and SE/30 all shared the same ROM.

This will be my spring/summer restoration project...  6.0.8 and a Mac286 board.

The SE/30 ROM isn't 32 bit clean so you'd need MODE32 to use more than...8MB? of RAM.
Yes, the IIx, IIcx and SE/30 all needed Mode32, but I think I can get the IIx running with the SE/30 ROM

I also have a IIsi ROM in my SE/30 that's 32 bit clean.  I'll try it in the IIx.

ROM should be on the system board as in the IIcx. The SIMM slot was for a clean ROM upgrade if and when. Connectix' patented software fix put an end to those developments  .  .  .  and a nasty class action suit when Apple acquired it.

Hmm-- I looked, but don't see any ROMs on the board. I see the silk screens for ROM 3, ROM 4, ROM 5,  ROM 6, but nothing else.

That's a new one on me, do not recall my IIx being outfitted like that!

Could you post a detail pic of the solder side of that mess?

They just dropped the socket for the ROM SIMM right in the middle of the two-- ROM 4 and ROM 6

They must have started with ROMS, and then switched to a ROM SIMM at some point.

Yep, that was my thought. What does your board say about date/revision/anything at all?

Has anyone got a board that has:

DIP ROM ICs ONLY - Rev?

DIP ROMs implemented, but has thruholes for the SIMM socket? Rev??

Very curious it is.

What a gorgeous machine! One of these big Mac II’s (II, IIx or IIfx) is definitely on my “WILL own someday” list. It will most likely become one of my primary 68k Mac’s once I find one. I’ve already got all of the matching peripherals (monitor, keyboard and mouse) waiting for it!

No revision or date anywhere, just the part number and 1988.

Every Mac IIx board I could find on the web had the SIMM socket.

I think it was a carryover from the original Mac II, and the board was changed to allow the ROM SIMM as well.

Thanks! I was happy to find one, and it was in better shape than I thought it would be.
