Lombard Reconstruction Weirdness

OK, so I decided today was the day to switch displays, the good display from the Lombard with the bad power card and 333 MB, to the one with the broken display and 400 MB. When I tested it before, with the processor from the 333 and a bit of RAM, it seemed to power up fine, the only problem was the display was broken.

So I slowly and carefully unhooked and re-hooked everything. Now it won't turn on. When I have power connected, either AC or battery, it goes through this endless cycle of (click/sleep light goes on) for 2 seconds, then (off/fan quivers once) for 2 seconds, and it just repeats.

Do I need to replace something else? Did I hurt something?

Assuming the excellence of rebuild, the behaviour is that of a confused Power Manager. After serious and invasive surgery, involving hardware substitution and replacement, and with the system battery out of the machine all the while, resetting the PMU is well-nigh essential. If you are confident of the charge in the system battery, give the reassembled machine at least five minutes on the AC adapter before resetting the PMU. If you are not confident of the battery's charge, let the Lombard stand on the charger for an hour or so before reset. If there is still no joy, back to standing on the AC adapter for several more hours before trying to reset.

If, after that, you cannot get startup, remove the main batteryand AC adapter, and let the PB stand for 30-or-so min. to reset the logic board (and deplete the backup battery). Then repeat the above with no main battery (only the AC adapter) in place. Given still no cogent response, you are left with the gruesome possibility of a hardware fault.

Hmmm. It's downright creepy. Tried the PMU reset as prescribed. Tried it with and without PRAM battery hooked up. It just keeps going through that weird on-off cycle as long as it has power, and ignores everything I do.

Maybe I should take everything out and put it back in...

You just might need to do that, Ace.

However before you do:

Remove everything except the CPU and RAM and LCD.

Reseat everything.

Reset PMU.

Try powering on.

If all goes well add in 1 component at a time.

If not, try the other CPU, following the steps described above.

I'm curious to hear the outcome; I have several Lombards and was thinking of trying the same thing (i.e., video display swap).

Now, I'm not as eager as I was before to try this.
