Just got a big sentimental score!

I just scored the first Mac I ever used! My best friends Quadra 605, that he received for Christmas 1993. Neither he or I have seen or used the computer in over 12 years. Long story short, I now own my childhood home and his dad - who my friend is estranged from - still lives two doors down. I knew my friend didn't take the computer with him when he moved out and I don't really ever talk to his dad. However, today he saw me outside and asked me a computer question, so I just happened to ask if he still had the old Mac. He said I have some old thing in the basement and your welcome to have it. I went over to take a look and sure enough, it was the 605!

So, we hauled it home and the first thing I did was open the case to see if the battery had leaked... and, unfortunately it has. :'( I just pulled the motherboard out to try and clean it up. It doesn't look as bad as some that I've seen, so maybe there is some hope for it.

Congratulations!

It really is a fun feeling to recover a computer that has memories associated with it.

Plus, The Quadra 605 is a nice machine. Good luck restoring it to working order!

Thanks! Definitely a lot of good memories associated with this computer. It was a year before I was able to get a computer of my own, so I was at my friends just about every day! :)

Well, I washed the board and the battery holder leads rusted through on one end and most of the way through the other, so I just pulled it off. That will have to be replaced. The rest of the board looks decent, but you never know. I'll have to solder another battery on and hope that's all that's wrong.

Worst case scenario, I'll pull the motherboard out of my other (working) 605 and put it in this one. The case has much less yellowing, an earlier serial number, and of course sentimental value. :)

That's cool! The Quadra 605 I have is my friend's first computer, too, that we upgraded together and she eventually gave me for my NetBSD museum:

MicroQuadraFeetsMacs™ are awesome conquests even without all those wonderful memories! ;)

So I wish you the best of luck in restoring your newfound "old friend" and may you have many wonderful times using it in the future! [:D] ]'>

Thanks! That's a nice Q605 you've got yourself!

I also forgot to mention that it had an ethernet card installed... another big score! :D

Yup, the 605 has a very nice look to the case, and is a deceptively powerful 68k Mac! :)

I wish I could have gotten to it years ago, but it will run again - it's just a question of will it have the original mobo...

I'm surprised Dana hasn't chimed in yet about the Q605. Personally, they're not my cup of tea. I prefer the larger Quadras with more expansion possibilities. I think I would feel constrained using a 605. Even the larger pizza boxes don't feel comfortable to me.

Exactly what I have been thinking!

I do really like the small size of these machines. Easier to have them out in a small apartment. :p

Yeah, the Quadra 950 is definitely the machine we coveted growing up - and one of my favorite machines in my collection.

A year after my friend got the 605, I got a IIsi and both have a really nice size and design... but, that didn't stop us from debating to no end about which one looked better! :)

Yes, the IIsi is also a great machine. I rescued mine from being scrapped at recycling event. It has been a great machine.

Nice save! Mine wasn't quite as free... My Mom bought it from a co-worker in 1994 for $900! 8-o

It was a great machine for a number of years, but now the power supply needs to be replaced. I have another working IIsi, that I am going to sacrifice to bring my original back to life. }:)

Thanks!

I think I've decided that I'm going to sacrifice my other Quadra 605 for parts. I wasn't going to do this, but after I gave it some thought, I remembered that I also have an LC with a dead power supply. So, I'll take the mobo from my other 605 and put it in my friends to bring it back to life, and move the power supply over to the LC. My goal is to have as many *different* working models as possible, so any doubles are candidates for being parted out.

I may still try and fix the "parts" 605, but I know precious little about repairing power supplies, so it should get interesting. Maybe I'll get lucky and it's just a fuse or something... :-/
