I got a weird one for ya

I have a road apple PowerMac 5460 I use as my central file server between Basilisk II and my localtalk machines. Since it has ethernet.

Well for some strange reason, if i select Ethernet as my appletalk source the whole thing locks up. no mouse movement or anything. So i force reboot with the 3 finger solute. Same thing during startup. I have to boot into extensions disabled and blow the prefs file for it to boot again.

Any ideas? Selecting Ethernet and DHCP in TCP/IP isnt causing a freeze. This is mac os 8.1

Few questions:

Have you tried a fresh install of the OS?

Did the Ethernet card before before?

Are the right drivers installed (if needed)?

Used to work. Now it doesnt. I know it worked before becuase i used it in conjunction with a tiger laptop for getting files through, becuase my main machine runs windows 7 x64 which does NOT support Basilisk II netowkring drivers.

A long time had passed between becuase of the Win7 issue and upgrading to leopard on the lappy. But i decided to mess with it once again.

So i installed vbox and installed XP inside that with basilisk, went over to the 5460 to switch back over to Ethernet appletalk (was printer port), and boom freeze. odd...

Sees IP addy from DHCP so i know the NIC isnt dead....

I havent tried a fresh install of the OS because OMG thats alot of work. lol. Lots of stuff on the HDD, 20gb HDD. I would have to back it up. Oh wait, network isnt working so i cant. hehe. The 5460 is used as a central system between any mac i hook up. it has both ethernet and localtalk, so if im working on an older mac without ethernet, it routes internet and appletalk localtalk files over, and etc... IPNetRouter isnt installed right now. it expired so i uninstalled it.

I use a pair of xBee Radio modems to make my localtalk network wireless. So im not confined to the cable when transferring files say, from a laptop without ethernet.

The weird thing is though, I have to enter my IP manually.

If i use DHCP, soon as i open icab, it freezes.

Not to mention, icab on this machine cannot keep up with my typing...

This is mac os 8.1

From experience, I've found 8.1 to be quite a nuisance on my 5215 since the OS tends to freeze for random reasons. For instance, if I keep the unit on Sleep mode for longer than 3 hours, the system hangs upon waking up. When my parents still had an AOL account, the system would freeze if it could not connect to AOL (or would suddenly freeze when trying to access e-mail, etc.). Also, when I transfer pics from my QT 200 to my external Avid HD, the system says an error occurred, and hangs.

Personally, I think your problems are with the OS. I'm not sure if 8.5 is better in terms of stability in comparison to 8.1, but I'd like to give it a try on my 5215 if I ever find a copy of it.

I think i have 8.6 somewhere. I know I have 8.5 in a system folder I saved off of a 3400c

Updated to 8.5 and it fixed it, however 8.5 is a DOG on 24mb of RAM, plus its a road apple and that doesnt help either.

I'm glad you got it to work with 8.5. I don't understand why 8.1 is so troublesome.

Would you recommend running 8.5 on a Performa with 64 MB of RAM?

I wouldn't recommend running 8.5 on anything, when there's a free bug fix update to 8.6

5460? Do you mean the road apple 5260, or the non-road apple 5400?

I run 8.6 on my 5260 (which has a full 64MB of RAM), it goes alright...the speed doesn't exactly pin your ears back (quite the opposite actually), but its not too bad, either. That said, the optimal OS for these machines, really, is 8.1.

On the Topic of PM 5xxx OSs

What OS would you recommend for a PM 5400/180?(This is currently the oldest mac still operating in our school and if my Bio teacher can pull some strings, it may be mine **) I'm guessing 7.6.1 would be nice and snappy. With it being a school computer I'm assuming it still has its stock 16MB of RAM, which kinda cuts out 8.

**Kinda funny how the 5400, the 500MHz G3 iMac that replaced it and the Core2Duo iMac that replaced the G3 are all still in the same room.

Does anyone know the steps on how to do a fresh install of the Mac OS 8.1 (or 8.x) software on a 6100?

I can get cd-roms made from Disk Utilites on my powerbook and the run them on the 6100 via its AppleCD 300e.

Specifically, I am shooting for the goal of getting the 6100 online with ethernet and Netscape 3.0 or IE3/4 ...
