With a good one, it's really hard to tell directly head on. The best way to tell a really good passive panel apart from an active one is to look at it from an off angle. That will be a dead giveaway, as the passive panels will wash out much worse than active ones will.
I can't tell for that one from the photos, but the 520c did ship with passive, so if it is an active panel, it was swapped.

That picture quality looks pretty good, but it's hard to tell from a still image... active matrix benefits are mostly seen in the refresh / response. Maybe ask the seller for a video? Or if they know it was bought with the active matrix upgrade?

I found the same listing - I can tell from one of the other photos where it looks washed out - it’s passive.

I know right! I got mine in admittedly poor condition but fully working last year at the VCF Swap Meet for $100, thinking I got a decent deal. Managed to haggle down from $150 as I thought that was too much. Then I go more recently to check eBay and I see them going for $200-300! Can't believe it.

I was lucky to get my 540c for £79 including postage, I think! It was a bit of a beater, and dirty, but fully working. The original owner had more system extensions installed than I could believe.

Something I've wanted to do for a while is see how slow/unstable I could make System 7 by just installing as many shareware extensions/control panels as possible... I'd imagine some of them would cause really weird conflicts, especially the ones that essentially do the same thing.
