Does an ATI Radeon 9800 XT video card from a G5 work in a G4 MDD?

Hi!

I have a 2004 G4 MDD - Apple's last machine capable of booting OS9. It has its standard Radeon 9000 installed which is fine for OS9, but does not support Core Image on OS X. Not that I really need it, but I could get a nice 256 MB Radeon 9800 XT from a PowerMac G5 :)

Now there is my question - does this work in the G4 MDD? I found sources on the net, telling that the AGP 4x Slot in the G4 does not provide enough power for this card and external power is needed. The card itself does not offer an option for external power (e.g. a Molex connector). This is never stated clearly tough and mixed up with incompatibilities regarding flashed PC cards.

Anyone have an answer or even tried this before?

Thanks!

The G5 ATi Radeon 9800XT is for AGP Pro slots and will not fit in a G4. A PC version flashed for PPC will work (assuming there is a ROM for it) as long as the proper pins are cut so it works at 4x AGP.

Thanks for setting me straight-- good info!

Thank you indeed. This is not mentioned anywhere but I can easily confirm it by looking closely at provided pictures. In fact I was not even aware hat AGP Pro existed until now - which I am a tiny bit ashamed of ;-)

So I'll get a Radeon 9600 instead altough I discovered in the meantime that OS 9 and Core Image capable video cards are more or less mutually exclusive. But then again, it's only 10 Euros so I'll give it a shot.
