China Ebay 68040 processor

How can I check if my 68040 is legit and not a rebranded LC68040? On OS7.5.3.

Dunno, but that crisp screen printing of the designation and the beat up orientation key printing would be a big flapping red flag in my book.

On OS8 one could see the processor in the System Profiler, but I cannot find similar thing in OS7.5.3..

71E41J is a 68060 mask. Yours is definetly some kind of remarked fake.

If it's a 060 it will die if you plug it into a 040 machine. If it's a 040 it probably is a LC chip.

TattleTech should tell you if there is a FPU or not.

Oh dear. Will I risk the LC575 logic board if I try? If so, perhaps I should leave it at that :-/

Would I expect to see improvements in audioediting operations (e.g. in Alchemy) with a floating point unit? Soundfiles are stored as integers in the digital audio formats I assume and not floating points..

The '060 pinout is very different from the '040, so you won't be able to damage anything unless you force it in the socket hard enough.

Yep that looks like a rebadge, the lettering is way too big. The printing varies in these so it's not clear what is / is not real. Here's a legit Motorola 68040 L88M for reference. Runs cool as a cucumber.IMG_7953 2.jpeg

So people are faking old CPU's for collectors who won't be plugging them into a machine anyway?
I've bought several m68040 / m68060 CPUs which were supposed to be the latest mask. Each time, when I've identified them as older, re-labeled CPUs, I've gotten a full refund and haven't had to mail back the CPU. I think most people don't check, or they think they're getting a CPU that should run cooler but doesn't. The bad part is that the sellers never get punished.

At least the m68060 tells you its version. There are errata which can be checked for in m68040s, but that's tricky and can only broadly tell you what group your CPU is in.

I gathered my courage and changed the CPU :) And.. it does not seem to have a FPU.

PayPal dispute next.

Where can you buy a legitimate 68040 nowadays?

It says FPU =none but then hardware FPU = yes.  That seems confusing. Could it be saying no discrete FPU chip but it does have an FPU on chip?

I'm reading that screenshot the same way as pcamen, that's there's not a separate FPU but there's one on the chip itself.

If you have a copy of Metronome handy that will explicitly say whether it's a full 68040 or a 68LC040.  Ditto for Apple Personal Diagnostics, where it will say in the FPU section "040 Built In" if I'm remembering correctly.

I agree, it may actually be reading an FPU as others have mentioned.  I would try a few options before jumping the gun.

Well, here is the report with the 68LC040 on board. So I thought they must be the same..

Perhaps someone could confirm.

The full 68040 in my 540c says under FPU = Present, with the original LC040 it said FPU = None.

Seems like you got a bad part.

Go to Norton SystemInfo - It will tell you if there is FPU or not.

I did bought an 68040 33mhz off ebay - it was re-masked as 68040 33mhz which it was really an 68LC040 33mhz - disputed it and got money back no question asked as he must've knew that he was selling fakes. That is how I found out it was non FPU.

Cheers

I got my money back, but the seller is still allowed to continue selling the fake 68040s on ebay and he even wanted me to return it... :vent:

Talk about a kick in the ass. Asking you to return the fake. I'd ship him a cat turd.

Every 040 has a FPU.  Probably why the software reports hardware FPU present. Technically this is true, the chip has an FPU.

LC's are just 040's that have faulty FPU's that were disabled by blowing fuses on the chip.

This happens during testing. If the chip passes all other tests but has a faulty FPU it will be downgraded.
