Anyone run Mac System lower than 6?

Does accessing the presumably HFS-formatted hard drive under System 1.1 corrupt anything? I ask because 1.1 is most definitely *not* HFS-aware. However, it could be that it uses the resident HFS driver that's built into the ROM on the 512ke and newer.

Some old games addressed the screen buffer directly, assuming its location. Later models of Macs have the screen at different locations in memory, causing those games to malfunction.
So on these later models of macs that have different memory locations that cause such issues, caused from the system ROM, CPU hardware, or the SSW version itself?

I was worried the drive might get corrupted when it was mounted, but when I rebooted, it went right back into System 6.0.8 with no issues! Been fine ever since too.

That makes the SE even more of an “ultimate” 68000 Mac in my eyes though (as well as it being easy to find, cheap to buy and very reliable). The fact that you can run System 1.1 all the way up to 7.1 comfortably is just awesome. Obviously, 7.5 is “supported”, but it’s not “fun” by any means on an SE.

The chart is wrong.

Model by model, here are some (but not all) requirements:

NOTE: I use the System version, not the "System Software" version, in my references.

512Ke: will run any system through 6.0.8.

Plus: will run any system version through 7.5.5. Shipped with 3.0 in its first run.

SE: same as above. Shipped with 4.0 in its first run.

SE FDHD/SuperDrive: also same as above. 6.0.3 was current when it came out but it can go older.

Classic: again, see above. Can run 6.0.8L. Shipped with 6.0.6/6.0.7, which is listed as the minimum, but has 6.0.3 on its ROM disk.

Classic II: can run 6.0.8L or 7.0.1 - 7.6 (but not 7.0)

SE/30: requires 6.0.3 minimum, officially cut off at 7.5.5 but can go further with a IIsi ROM

LC: requires 6.0.6 minimum, goes up to 7.5.5

LCII: despite what the requirements say, it does NOT require 6.0.8....6.0.6/6.0.7 will work just fine. Goes up to 7.6.

I have run 3.2 on an SE SuperDrive, 1.0 on a Classic, and 6.0.7 on several LCIIs. I also have lived dangerously and run 6.0.6 on a Classic :)

6.0.8L will run on the LC, LCII, Classic, and Classic II only. I believe it also runs on the PowerBook 100. Note that of all of these models, all but the Classic II can run regular 6.0.8.

One final comment: it is sometimes possible to pair a Finder version with another System. I once put System 4.1's Finder with System 6.0.7 just to see what would happen. I also did this on an LC. Much to my surprise, it worked. I even got MiniFinder to work on an LC--possibly the first and only time that's been attempted! It was surprisingly stable and another reminder that the Finder is just a glorified application program in the grand scheme of the system.
