Hey gang, here's a great little find for my collection: a 1993 Apple PowerCD. A three-in-one device combining a regular audio-CD player, external CD-ROM drive for computer as well as a Kodak photo-CD player. A rare find. It arrived just in time for... my birthday! Anyone up for cake?
I was browsing a Dutch second-hand Mac site three days ago. I checked out some of the ads in my region, and found one for a PowerCD that was listed nearly three weeks ago. Since the ad was still up, I sent off an email if the buyer still had it. He did, and was willing to sell if for a *very* reasonable price. Paid 55 euros for it - including shipping. Quite a bargain, considering these regularly sell on Ebay for hundreds of dollars...
According to the seller, it was working and complete, even with the box. I decided to give it a go. I didn't even ask to see any pictures. It arrived this afternoon. And it's immaculate. Complete with the base, SCSI cable, power brick, remote, even a few data-CD's that were originally included.
The box itself is quite worn as you'd expect after nigh on 18 years. There are a few scratches on the bottom of the remote, but the player itself looks immaculate and works like a charm. Popped in a CD and it played straight away. Even plays burned CD's as well.
I don't plan to hook it up to any Mac right now. From what I read, it functions as a 1x drive, meaning it'll take you ages to install even the smallest piece of software. I also don't want to overtax it, considering the age of this device and finite life of the laser assembly and such.
All in all, I'd call this a stunning little find!
