A Re-Conquest : TiBook 500

Good afternoon and Happy Holidays!

In college, I bought a used TiBook 400, after a gentleman noticed I was posting to a car forum using a 3400c. He offered me this notebook for $400 (this was back in 2004).

After using it for a while, of course it went in stand-by mode, as I moved onto Linux and other things.

The other day I found this notebook in a tote of my computer stuff (i'm doing a little consolidation) and decided to charge it up. After a very long time of no activity, the guy sprang to life, and booted Tiger. I knew this notebook supported OS 9.2.2, so I installed it, and voila! My TiBook is back in its glory, running 9.2.2 and Classilla. In fact, i'm posting from it now.

I have lost my yo-yo charger for it, but borrowed the charger from my Powerbook G4, and it worked.

I must say, this is the first time I've used 9.2.2 on a G4 (I also have a 3400c, and a 1400c/G3 that will eventually get the same attention).

I'll post pictures later, unless 9.2.2 supports USB mass storage devices.

Later!

Britt

By the way, is there a site devoted to OS 9+ like system7today is for System 7?

I'd like to see if there are any software updates for OS 9.

Updates in what sense? If you want to grab the updates from Apple, go to the Apple menu and select Software Update. I'm *pretty* sure it still works. You can even use it to bring a 9.0/9.0.4 install all the way up to 9.2.1.

Very cool! When I was in school, we still had a few G4 sawtooth's floating around with OS 9 being used as video editing machines for my multimedia class. They did OK for basic needs, but they didn't have much hard drive space (then again, none of the macs did because nobody knew how to delete stuff when they were done with it :p ).

I've used thumb drives on many Macs with OS 9 and never had any problems. Not sure about other drives, though. The only thing (if I remember correctly) it adds random files to your thumb drive like "TheVolumeSettingsFolder"... and it seems to make various copies in different folders. It gets annoying sometimes if you use a thumb drive that you have a lot of stuff on. Not sure if theres a way to prevent it, I just got used to it.

It does!

Super cool! Ran about 4 hours until the battery got kinda low.

I'll give the USB thing a try...I should look for one of the original iPods that work with iTunes 1 or 2...that would be really great!

The Update system does still in fact work. It downloaded a iPod update and a DVD drive firmware upgrade, but both of those were N/A for my uses (the DVD update had already been applied).

And boy is it quick! Even surfing the web (something that is stupidly, absurdly slow on the nubus and 603 equipment is lightening fast on the G4).

This makes me really miss my Pismo.

I think what my plan is to test out the HTTP driver that one grand individual wrote here, and try to see how well it will work from my linode.

Although i'm trying to get off of linode and rack my own iron, this will be a good test for now.
