A few Mac SE/30 related questions

1) Is there any way to adjust the slightly bluish tint I'm seeing on my SE/30 display (i.e. white colors are not pure white). I have an SE FDHD next to it and its display is showing true grayscale. I've cranked the SE/30's brightness as high is it will go using the knob on the front bezel.

2) Do you recommend System 7.5.3 over System 7.1 rev 3 for file sharing (locally and over the Internet)? Frustratingly, my SE/30 is dropping connection to my MacBook Pro (which acts as a server) after only a few minutes (I'm running 7.1 rev 3 right now). There is no such setting on the server side to drop a client connection, so I'm assuming that the Mac SE/30 is preemptively dropping the connection on its own. Are there software tools in place to keep the connection alive? (I'm using Fetch 2.1.2.)

3) Are other vendors (like Big Mess O' Wires, Inertial) who specialize in offering new hardware solutions for vintage Macs?

Thanks!

1.  I think it's just a function of each individual CRT.  My SE/30s both look bluish.  My two 128k's and my 512k both look just a tad greenish ... but closer to pure white than the SE/30.  I think it will be a function of the CRT manufacturer and manufacture date.  The CRTs are swappable between those machines so you can find one you like and put it in your SE/30.  (I like the bluish tint personally.)

Does it do this with other protocols?  Does it do it with AppleShare over AppleTalk?

Thanks! For me, it's not a deal breaker (I don't mind the bluish tint) but it seems noticeable since I have an SE sitting right next to it. Might have to move 'em to different parts of my room :D

Probably not. Those CRTs were slightly bluish even in the 1980s.

Perhaps I should have said AppleShare over EtherTalk - I meant over the Ethernet transport.  i.e., is the problem you're seeing on the Ethernet layer or on the IP layer?
The Mac SE/30 still shows on the local network with no issues, so I'm guessing it's something with the IP layer?

I may have to upgrade to 7.5.5. I'm also going to pick up a ROM-inator II. What are some of the things you recommend doing with it?
I also have a Floppy Emu from BMOW which can emulate and HD20, so this allows you to have an external HD using the external drive port.  You can boot from the built-in ROM disk, and you can boot quicker when you have more than 16MB of RAM because the memory test is disabled.  I haven't done it yet, but you can install System 7.6+ as well

Can you make an AFP connection over AppleTalk/Ethernet and send a big file?  The reason I ask is that there are cases where something wrong with Ethernet will mean that small amounts of data come through fine, but large amounts just kind of die.  Does this match what you're seeing or is this just a timeout on an idle connection?

It's more of a timeout / idle connection. I'm able to pull large files down to the Mac SE/30 with no issue. I just want the connection to stay active, even if I'm not actively downloading / uploading something at the moment.

I'm not 100% sure just what the issue you are having is. What is the exact problem, and what are you hoping to achieve?

I’m trying to maintain a solid FTP  connection between the SE/30 and my modern Mac, even when both machines are idling. It seems that the connection lasts for about 10 minutes or so before the SE/30 is disconnected from the MBP.

Ultimately, what I want to do is directly pull .hqx and .sit files from my MBP to the SE/30, but that’s another post.

Ok, I see what you mean. Usually either the host or the client FTP programs have some sort of preference about maintaining idle connections or not, and for how long. Have you checked the settings for both of these? If I am not mistaken, Fetch does have settings for this.

I’ll add a few comments too although similar to some others.

1.) mine also has a bit blueish tint but i really like the display, the blacks are very black and the cool tints makes it easy to work on for hours.

2.) mine came with 7.1 but i soon upgraded it to 7.5.5 as the later version was just easier for networking and getting it online and i still find it quick on 7.5.5 especially if you upgrade your ram. I popped in 128mb like many others and can now use the latest software titles happily.

so given your dropping out issue goto 7.5.5

i do have a BMOW simm but you need to install that prior to going to 7.5.5. Without a fresh install. I hadn’t and therefore it wouldn’t work with 128mb of ram So I’m just using mode32. One day when i pop in a modern sd based hard drive I’ll set it up.

just out of interest how much ram do you have?
