7200/120 Mailserver

Couple of questions:

1.What OS between 7.5.3 and 8.6 would be best for a mailserver?

2. If the system is clean, no bad caps (WOW!), good strong power supply, and no issues, should I be able to run this 24/7 as a mail server?

The 7200 is a relatively recent computer, so yes, it can run 24/7 without any problems. I have a 9600 which runs as a server continuously. It's excellent hardware.

Too bad you don't something with a 604(e). If you did, OS X would easily be best for mail serving. Of course there are various email server programs for System 7 and 8, but they're obviously older and most likely commercial.

There are three obvious options:

AppleShare IP 5 (for 7.6.1; version 6 for various later Systems)

Apple Internet Mail Server

Eudora Internet Mail Server

The latter two were freeware. ASIP can, however, be found if you go looking.

Claris also produced OfficeMail, but I am not sure how viable that would be to use (e.g., I think it likely required a modem connection). And I suppose that it would, in principle, be possible to experiment with a PowerTalk-based mail system in System 7.5, but I am not sure that you would get it to work on today's internet. It would, however, make an interesting retrochallenge project.
