6400/180 - no red color?

(just noticed this may be in the wrong forum, sorry...)

I just grabbed a cheap 6400/180 (see post in conquests), came with an M2943 multiple scan monitor. All seems to work well, but on starting up the red colors disappear. Sometimes they come back on then they leave again, making the screen look very blue-hued. This is an old install of 7.5.1, with tons of bloat and random programs I've never seen...

So, would you say this is a monitor issue, graphics chip, or software? As of now, red has shown up again - and it's just been sitting there not being touched, running a 7.6.1 clean install...

Terrible, *TERRIBLE* monitor. They are plagued with all sorts of problems, mostly cold solder connections. There was an Apple Repair Program that expired almost a decade ago. Seriously, throw it out.

Haha, okay... Recommend a good CRT not so prone to annoyances like these?

I'd be trying another monitor. Seriously, as Gil said, the MS 15" displays were shocking, even back in the day. I bet if you try another monitor, you'll find that there is nothing at all wrong with the 6400. Any CRT, even a SVGA CRT from an old PC, or a modern LCD with a VGA adaptor will work fine.

Yeah I'll have to dig out my converter, plenty of PC monitors around but just didn't know if there was a good Apple monitor from the mid-90's... and it's been working fine since those first few hours of non-red, so I don't get it. Temperamental.

Oh sure, there are some good monitors. Really, anything *EXCEPT* the MS 15" is good.

Only a matter of time before it kicks off for good. :-/

The M2943 is one of the most brittle displays I have ever seen. Most other Apple displays hold up fairly well, but every single M2943 I have is crumbling - even the ones with perfectly colored plastic!

It is quite obviously an outsourced Apple monitor, but not one of the good ones, like the Performa Plus Display. While fairly boring looking and limited to only one resolution, the Performa Plus has been a reliable, bright, sharp display even after all this time. The OEM is Magnavox if I recall.

Isn't that model number "M2943" for the defective 15" apple multiscan displays? Stay away... FAR away from them as well as the 1710's I have a 1705 and it has never given me a problem (crosses fingers).

I had the 14 version and it did the exact same thing about 5 years after having it. Was a bother, but when it came back randomly it was like, "wow so beautiful".
