FINALLY! IT'S MINE!!! one problem tho...

i put a music disc in the slot loading drive to rip into iTunes. now, every time i press the eject button, nothing happens. i can hear the disc spin up, but it also doesn't show up in finder either... any help would be greatly appreciated

Restart holding down the mouse button. I've had this problem with my AlBook before, and that fixes it every time.

If the disk is seen by Disk Utility, you can tell it to unmount / eject it.

This thread is special to me.

I just got my Ti back a few days ago after loaning it out for about 2 months to a friend in need.

Now that I have my 'main machine' back, I can sell my Thinkpad.

Yay!

oh Nice! my favorite laptop of all time was a 1GHz TiBook! if you ever need any help with the hardware of those things let me know, i've taken them apart so many times i could do it blind-folded.

and as for the disc, just be patient, if the drive doesn't recognize it the disc it should (if it isn't busted) eject it after a period of time. i would also take the bottom-cover off (6 or 7 torx screws on the bottom and then slide the cover off towards the front and then lift up) and make sure that the ribbon-cable is properly plugged in to the motherboard.

I never liked the TiBook much - bad build quality, and the dark keyboard doesn't match the rest of the design.

bad build quality? if you use them as frisbees, maybe.

truth of the matter is they have excellent build quality. any laptop will disintegrate if you mistreat it.

okay, so i took a look inside of my book, everything seems to be intact. i just now entered a blank cd-r into my book to test if the drive is okay or if it needs to be replaced. if that's true, i'll upgrade to a superdrive.

also i noticed when i was in system profiler, i looked under devices, and it said that no burning device was found... is that some thing little, or is it something i need to be worried about?

thats something to be worried about. the slot-loading drives on the tibooks are hit and miss, the superdrive that came in my 1ghz tibook started to die about 2 years ago and i finally replaced it middle of last year.

if you can afford it, replacing the drives in those things is extremely easy and totally worth it. oddly enough my old tibook has a better optical drive than my MBP, 8x DL compared to 6x DL.

you can get a non-DL DVD-RW for $70 here, or a DL version for $110 here.

thanks dan, for all of the help. i think i'll just go for the non-dl after i get an airport card, which i think i need more.

ah probably. luckily those are also easy to install :)

when you do get the card be sure to click the antenna plug in all the way, the little square bit should be flush with the card itself (or very close anyways), and you should be able to turn the plug slightly in the socket. Also be sure to "click" the plug down into the little metal bracket, this makes it much easier to install the bottom and ensure that the airpot card won't interfere with the external PCMCIA slot.

actually, i called the place i bought it from, and they said that they would replace the drive free of charge, i just have to take it in.

oh nice. see if you can hang out while they change it. the insides of TiBooks are really nifty.

they actually said that they probably couldn't do it while i wait. but, i have seen the inside, when i needed to check the cables. it looks like they crammed a lot of stuff in there lol.

Free installation is always a good thing.

I need to take my Ti apart and add some Arctic Silver to the CPU. It's running a tad on the hot side and I just know the old thermal paste is nearly dried up and useless by now. Either that or Apple used an entire tube on the CPU.

I say that because for a while that is just what they were doing.

Apple uses a glob of green goo on the CPU, and nothing but thermal pads on the GPU and etc. its kind of a pain to clean off, but once you do get it clean and add arctic silver an odd downside is that the fan(s) start to spin more often as a greater amount of heat is being transferred from the CPU to the heatsink, rather than just being trapped in the CPU. its a trade-off i'm willing to live with, however.

Congrats on getting a 1GHz TiBook! I'm typing this one one right now, and it's a great, great machine. I hope it gives you years and years of good service, especially since it's the fastest PowerBook that'll boot MacOS 9.

If you have trouble finding the correct MacOS ROM version to boot 9 on there, lemmie know. I've got it.

I've got a 550Mhz TiBook - it's a work of art. It served me well for many years. Since the keyboard on my 12" is currently busted, my TiBook is going back into service as my work computer.

I always wanted the 1Ghz model, but it still sells in Japan for $800+ [:(!] !]'> [:(!] !]'> [:(!] !]'>

I think they're in much lower supply than the other models due to the $700 premium they commanded over the mostly-comparable 867MHz model. You only gain 133MHz (and double the VRAM, which was what interested me)

Also, considering that they're the last, fastest PowerBook that runs Classic, I think they'll have greater supply and lower demand than other models well into the future.

EDIT: I meant greater demand and lower supply. 1GHz TiBooks are hard to find in my experience. Several other models are quite common, though.
