External optical drive for iMac G3 DV

Hey all! Hoping someone can help me figure out what I need to do next.

I have a slot loading iMac G3 DV running OS 9.0.4 that I set up for some old educational software for my kids. The slot loading optical drive is unreliable and doesn’t eject without me grabbing the disc—if it kicks it out far enough to get a finger on it, which is about 50% of the time. This hasn’t been a problem until now because the games I have installed for my kids don’t require a disc to be in to run.

My dad just gave me a bunch of game CDs from my childhood and those need to be in the CD drive for the game to run. So I need to come up with a solution so my kids can swap discs without me.

I’m not confident in my ability to tear down the machine and fix the slot loading drive, but if there’s a good tutorial with pictures somewhere, I might be willing to try that. But my ideal solution is to see if I can get an external optical drive to work.

I bought a Que QPS-525 USB drive, and while I was able to get it to mount CDs, the games weren’t recognizing them. It does show as a device available in Apple System Profiler. I could run the games directly off the CD in the Que drive, but I’m also using the old Kid Desk software to keep it simple for my kids, and that wouldn’t recognize the game off the CD if I ejected it and then re-mounted it. (Kid Desk has you enable software for each user. Enabling it off the CD in the Que drive worked until ejecting and re-mounting the disc—somehow Kid Desk doesn’t recognize it as the same instance of the game if it’s in the Que drive.)

A Reddit group recommended I get a FireWire optical drive instead, so I picked up a LaCie LightScribe DVD drive. I can’t get that to mount discs but everything seems to be working. It’s not showing up in Apple System Profiler.

So, what am I doing wrong, or what should I try next? Thanks in advance for any help!

Your computer might not have the needed extensions installed for using USB and FW external drives.

Okay, that makes sense—thanks! Hopefully not a stupid question: Where would I start looking for appropriate drivers? The Que drive had an install CD with Toast and I think a driver, which I installed, but obviously that doesn’t seem to have worked. Is it something that might be on an OS 9 install disc? I’ve wondered if updating to 9.2 would help—am I off base there?

The drivers are on the OS disks... I haven't worked out exactly what the best way to get them in would be.

Have a look in the System Folder, extensions, and see if there are any extensions called anything to do with CD and USB. Take a photo of what you find.

Looks like I have Apple CD/DVD Driver. I also see an couple FireWire extensions. There’s a whole bunch of Toast USB drivers. And a few USB extensions. I attached photos of what I’m seeing—sorry for the phone picture of an CRT screen. Is any of that helpful?

@ClassicGuyPhilly, thanks! That driver says it’s not needed if I have OS 9 installed. My iMac is on 9.0.4. Would I still need that?

One more idea I had: Could I just make images of the discs on the iMac hard drive and then mount them all at startup? I’m already doing that for a couple games that I couldn’t find discs for… But I didn’t know if mounting a bunch of disk images would slow down the computer past a certain point. Ideally in that solution everything would be mounted at once so my kids wouldn’t have to have me present to eject and mount images. Would that be a bad idea?

Okay, so I am missing the USB Mass Storage Support extension, and maybe that USB Support extension as well. Sounds like maybe I need to dig up an OS 9 install CD and install missing extensions. I'll give that a try and hopefully it'll work! Thanks so much for the help!

If I upload the files here is it easier for you?
