    12-inch RGB monitor width adjustment

After a long time running my IIsi through an adaptor to an LCD monitor, I just found a 12" RGB monitor sitting at the local tip waiting to be loved. I cleaned it up and mated it with my IIsi. They seem to be enjoying the honeymoon. Made for each other :beige: Display worked straight away at...

Best Stuffit version or alternative for IIsi

My IIsi has 7.5.3 on it and two versions of Stuffit Lite (3.6 and 4.5). Both show registration nag screens but registration is of course impossible, and neither version will work. Is there a way to get Stuffit to work on a IIsi, or is there an alternative to expand .sit files? Rick

    G3 iMac 400 power troubleshooting

I've been given a strawberry G3 iMac 400/DV that is nice and clean but won't power up. So far I've replaced PRAM battery and tried pushing the CUDA switch. On one occasion the power-on button flashed for less than a second, but generally nothing fires up. I do hear a pop in the speakers, which...

SE joins the family - SCSI issue?

I've been pretty disgusted by the apparent siphoning off of all tech treasures from our local recycling monopoly, so haven't visited much recently. On a whim, I dropped in and saw a SE Superdrive sitting on the bench. The vulture must have been napping somewhere else, so I snapped it up. Nice...

Apple Power Supplies - why watts?

In a current Conquests thread on a PB165 there has been discussion of correct ratings for power supplies that should be connected to various PB models. The official Apple support document seems to suggests you should not connect a PSU that exceeds the recommended level of "watts". I don't get...

    PB190cs odd screen

The PB190cs that I'm now working on has a strange screen symptom. It powers up, and the screen stays mainly a murky dark green except for the top menu bar and the bottom tab area, which are both normal including showing cursor when it is there. If I click on a drop-down menu in the visible part...

    Powerbook swag in Canberra

I thought I had finished my accumulation phase, but... Tipped off by Byrd, I bid for a lot of Powerbooks on ebay, located in Canberra, Australia. Since freight is often a prohibitive cost for me, I jumped at this. Nobody else jumped, so I got the lot for $20 and picked it up myself. 1 A G3...

Is MintPPC still best option for G4 Powerbook?

I'm giving MintPPC a try on my G4 TiBook, but I notice there has been no release since November 2011. Is there a better alternative? Rick

USB Wireless mouse on G4, Tiger

I have a Logitech V220 wireless mouse "for laptops", which I'd like to use with my Titanium Powerbook (I don't like trackpads). The only Mac driver package on the Logitech site requires OSX 10.5 Leopard. Anyone know of any driver or hack that might work? Rick

    Hardware Test for Compacts

Was there ever an equivalent of the OSX Mac Hardware Test suite for Compacts? I could really do with some diagnostics. Maybe a library of scripts to exercise things interactively, separate from POST tests in the ROM? Apple techs must have had something to work with other than just poking...

    FDD graphical test utility

In a thread here I can no longer find, somebody posted a link to a video of a conference presentation on 400/800k drive maintenance. The presenter had up on screen a neat full-screen GUI utility that showed the status of many parameters on the target floppy drive, and disk under test. It...

    Tiger doesn't jump into Windows

Not sure if this is the right forum area, but.... I have 10.4.11 set up on a Powerbook G4 and am connecting to a mixed SMB network (Windows, Linux, Mac...) The Powerbook shows up in network directories on other computers and can be accessed by others. However, the SMB workgroup does not show...

Best OS for Powerbook G4 Original (400Mhz)

This ol' thing has 10.3.9 loaded. It has 768Mb RAM. Is it worth upgrading OS X to 10.4.11? One side issue is the browser. I downloaded the current TenFourFox but it won't run - is 10.3.9 the problem? Rick

PowerBook G4 PRAM battery - DIY replacement?

I accidentally acquired a Powerbook G4 today and found what many threads here have led to - if the PRAM battery is flat, the main battery will not charge either, and the thing appears to be dead. Simple solution is to leave on charger for an hour or so with the main battery out of the case -...

    IWM doesn't recognise 800k drive

I have an 800k Sony drive that has stopped booting on a 512k or a Plus, but still reads\writes OK when attached to my IIsi. The IIsi has SWIM chip, the Compacts have the IWM chip. But I understand that the SWIM is just a combination of the IWM with another set of logic to drive the 1.4mb...

Schematics - Mac IIsi and others

I've been in touch with a guy who has an archive of reverse-engineered schematics, including for Mac IIsi and its PSU. I've told him I'm a restorer and he is willing to provide, but only by paper post and to a postal address in USA. If any other IIsi owner wants these and has a US address...

    Extra cooling for hotter ICs

Running some tests over a few hours with the IIsi case open, I found that the CPU and the two LSI system chips seemed to get steadily warmer, quite hot to touch after about 4 hours. In principle. cooler chips should give better performance and live longer. I'm thinking about sticking some...

    Superdrive FDD compatibility

On another forum I've been asked whether a 3.5" 1.4mb superdrive (as standard in SE-Mac II) can be connected to a Plus logic board. My assumption is that the earlier ROMs will not recognise a Superdrive, even as a 800k drive. Mac docs do not suggest it is possible. Has anybody tried this? Rick

    Format 1.4mb disk for 800k

This topic is probably an old chestnut buried somewhere, but I couldn't find a thread about it on this forum. :I I need to make a number of 800k disks from images for my 512ke, but I don't have any 800k-specified disks. I can use the superdrive and software in my IIsi, or the 800k drive in a...

Save a damaged 800k floppy drive

A lot of Compacts lose their 800k FDD when somebody damages them while trying to clean the heads. If the top head is lifted more than about 1cm the metallic spring "hinge" is permanently bent too far to snap the head down onto the disk surface when the head-lifter is released. I've done this...
