Someone on Macintosh Garden was surprised when I mentioned that you could boot a Mac with just a System File and an Application, so I made a quick video showing the simplest (crudest) way of doing it.
There are several better ways, including my preference, using the Norton "Startup Disk...
So... I've been faffing reading a lot of BeOS related stuff in the last few days, and today I've been working on my "list of compatible, and sort of compatible machines".
While going through the FAQs on the Be website looking for the beta ATi Drivers for BeBoxes... I found this little gem! This...
I occasionally see casual references to 250MHz Tsunami 8600s and 9600s. I feel like this is an error, but not seeing something is never reason to believe it doesn't exist. I was about to correct a Macintosh Garden page but the frustrating thing is that it is almost impossible to prove that...
Previously I've had someone (sorry, I can't find the old posts, I can't remember who it was) tell me that fitting an LED to the "desktop" LED footprint will change a Quadra 800 into a Quadra 650, which caused confusion because that contradicts how my Centris 650 behaves (if I jumper the J25...
I've found a new way to overclock Wombats.
If you have a 33MHz Q650 or a Q800...
Step 1 - bridge J29 with solder, it is next to the CPU.
That's it.
Your Wombat will now boot at 40MHz.
The machine photographed above has a 16.6MHz clock fitted at G3!
More detail.
So it turns out that the...
I bought some NOS DD floppy disks a couple of years back and almost all of them have bad sectors.
I was just wondering if there is any way to... Rejuvenate them? There is no data on them, I'm just wondering if there is any software that is able to do anything like format the bad sectors...
As people know, BeOS was originally been developed internally for the AT&T Hobbit processor, then switched to the PowerPC and ran on Be's own BeBox, then transitioned to running on a select few Macs... Before gaining an x86 version and ultimately collapsing in the early 2000s.
The Be retro...
Evening folks.
Apple released the early G4s, Yikes and Sawtooth, with special, updated versions of Mac OS 8.6. I'm not sure if people are aware, but @LightBulbFun did some excellent work here to produce a modified version of the Mac OS ROM file, that goes in the System Folder, to enable this...
I finally got it right and made a CD which will boot a mac from a 3rd party CD-ROM.
Currently I have made a Mac OS 7.6.1 CD...
I've put it here, and will follow up with some others. Not sure if the CD I picked was British or US English, I'll go and check and update the page to clarify.
Edit -...
Hey folks, pretty please I'm interested to see the differences in what resistors are fitted on the 5500, 6500 and TAM. Could you take a photo of the following resistors and let me know what computer the board is from? Especially interested in the TAM.
Resistors of interest :
R165
R272
R273...
I recently picked up three Wombats (Centris 650, Quadra 650 and Quadra 800) boards for my dad, sold not working.
I thought I'd try to document the repairs a bit more than usual. Just ramblings, I'm not stuck (yet), please don't fill the thread with preemptive suggestions.
The boards are...
Hey folks, as a kid I used a circuit simulator (and basic mechanical stuff like gears) in school called "Crocodile Clips". There was actually a Mac version which I downloaded the demo of version 3.5 back in the day... And still have it seems (I'll put it on the garden after I move it from...
Back in the day, level editors existed for a number of popular games, including, but not limited to...
Marathon Series
Glider
Avara
Prince of Persia
SimCity 2000 (especially the Urban Renewal Kit)
F/A-18 Hornet
Quake
and many others.
Would anyone be interested in getting together and learning...
So, there are a couple of ways of modifying Startup Screens that I know of.
On older OSes (pre System 7.5 era) you can edit the icon and text string (it's a pascal string, so keep it the same length or modify the length manually).
On "Mac OS" type systems there are a series of pict resources...
I think I know what is wrong, but hope this helps anyone else that sees similar behaviour.
My dad's Mac classic clock doesn't advance when there is no battery installed, but does when there is a battery. Looking at the schematic, this probably means that the diode D2 is bad, or the traces...
Hey folks, what if anything is stopping you flash the Classic ROM to a Hi and Lo chip for the SE?
This would gain you a ROM disk, and perhaps some bug fixes, not sure. As well as being a FDHD compatible ROM.
Anyone got thoughts on this?
I always thought the logic board provided termination power in Macs, but my Performa 630s (two of them) will only boot (gets to Welcome to macintosh, then stops, mouse still moves) with a CD Drive installed if I enable the Term Power jumper on the back of the drives.
Obviously I don't want to...
So the Apple System installers include two PPC upgrade control panels, "Power Macintosh Card" and "601 Processor Upgrade". My card in my C650 and the one in my IIci are only recognises by one of them I believe, the "Power Macintosh Card" one.
Does anyone definitively know what the difference...
So I'm having the mystical Error -412 when copying files to a volume in Mac OS 8.6. Apparently, this is caused by having too many comments on the volume. Does anybody know how to nuke all the comments in 8.6?
