Pretty mid-sized update. The 550c finally found a new friend/brother/relative/distant cousin/brother-from-a-same-mother..w/e ;)

Picked up a 540c for 70 bucks shipped.

Files from 1995-96 were still on the computer, the last files look like from 1998, but there seems to be misc files from "1904" which I assume were created after the PRAM battery failed...wiped the HDD already, so they're all gone! Right side hinge cover was busted when I received it, so I replaced it with one from the 520-turned-parts-machine that I have lying around.

Also, picked up Mac OS 9.1 for about 65 shipped. I think it was worth it. The shop even included the original receipt, which I thought was kinda cool seeing the original price of 99.95. Now-a-days, we get our Mac OSes for free. ;)

Found System 7 for really cheap, also. Disks still sealed.

And System 7.5. Not sealed. And 8.5. Sealed. And 10.1...not sealed but was sealed. Because.

I'm still looking for Mac OS 8.1, 8.0 (floppy disk version), and an iTunes CD of 2.0.4 or earlier.

Finally, I picked up a hardware accelerator card from a member here. Thanks to @twocargar my TAM now feels speedy. It's very refreshing, surfing the net on Classilla. I love it!

IMG_4014.thumb.JPG.52147cea138a0b7781d26564df4fea12.JPG

Installed the latest software I found on the Macintosh repository site, and loaded up without a hitch.

IMG_4018.thumb.JPG.db82bae21cd505f154aa789d30350725.JPG

G3 powered, baby!

IMG_4026.thumb.JPG.403b9b332642b0d953eb32bf10284092.JPG

Well, that's all the updates I have to post. The 300MHz Sonnet will hold me down for now, until I find something faster...I've already put up a WTB listing on a site, if you know where to find it ;) But I'm just going to enjoy the TAM for now.

I do have a boxed Newton 2100 with manuals and software/packaging, but I haven't had time to pull it out and snap some pics - that will be next time, I guess. It may be trading-fodder someday to acquire some more desired items on my list, so I haven't really considered it part of my "permanent collection," yet. I'm trying not be get too overwhelmed with new toys since I'm about to move! So, until next time. Paz

Nice haul!  The 550C and 540C you'll have to network together and play Marathon/Bolo on.

The difference in speed between L2 G3 accelerators is meagre - think 5 - 10% per 100Mhz increment - so 300Mhz is probably good enough.

Thank you! Haha, I didn't know that. I've already tried Marathon on the 550c...I'm afraid the 540c might lag behind a tad :) that doesn't quite resolve my question on how to play with only two hands and a set of eyes!

I noticed the jump in performance was noticeable. There is a bit of lag when scrolling on Classilla using scroll wheel, and that was pretty much my main concern. If a 500MHz card would not cause a noticeable improvement, then I may invest my efforts into other acquisitions. I appreciate the input on the accelerators

Soo excited, I won another PB 550c! Complete with box, software and manuals. Comes with a PCMCIA module in box! Don’t know if the module is a C, B, or A, but I hope it’s either B or A. I’d like to collect each revision. And a 100MHz (99MHz) PPC Card along with the original 33MHz 68040!

Pics from the auction:

Ended at 544.28 usd, 1usd=109.13 yen. Not including import and domestic shipping. Lower than I anticipated spending.

The 550c itself is in working condition, but the LCD bezel is damaged. I’ll need to transplant an undamaged front bezel and brightness switch cover to make it whole again.

Sooo if anyone has a damaged 550c laying around and wants to make a nice sum of money (neg), or something else, watch for my official wtb listing coming up soon, or shoot me a msg (: pleeeeeeeaze!

You crazy :O

Can you dump the ROM of the thing with the full 040 card installed?

There was a discussion about wether the ROM on the 550 is different from the other 500s in one of the homemade-full-040 CPU card hack threads somewhere.

Heh heh - I’ve often thought this, but you’ve confirmed one of my greatest fears :)

Absolutely! I’ve never dumped anything before, but if you or someone walk me through it, I should be able to accommodate.

One thing I notice, when I install the cpu daughterboard of my 520 into my current 550c, the system does not boot - no happy Mac, and there are artifacts on the grey screen, like a broken piece of LCD on side among other artifacts. (I wanted to run the Lind battery program since it requires a 68k processor). Haven’t tried the 540c processor, yet, tho!

Bust my crackerjacks. Two 550c PowerBooks in one day! Just found my “parts” machine, with a Buy It Now price of 20,000 yen (about 182 usd). Checked Yahoo! Auctions this afternoon for fun, and someone had just listed this nonpowering one:

https://www.fromjapan.co.jp/en/auction/yahoo/input/c654191435/lgk-link_search

The body looks superb!! Now the issue, beside it not powering on... the underside has “Assembled in USA” printed. My current one is a “Assembled in Singapore.” I have no idea what my complete in box one has printed, but very likely it’s a Singapore model if I had to guess

It’s going to be very difficult cannabalizing this one, but I do need a parts machine. And, sometimes, we all have to make sacrifices! :O

Any chance you'd sell it's processor?

Would a 550 processor work in a 540c?

c

When I receive it, I can let you know for sure. I’m looking for a NUpowr upgrade card, specifically the 183c (183MHz w/ L2 cache). If this was not upgraded and has the stock processor, I’ll shoot you a pm

As far as compatibility, there was a recent auction with a 540c equipped with the 68040 from a 550c. Ive not heard of any compatibility issues

OK.

I wish I could just buy one of these off you (the one that doesn't come in the original box?), but it'd likely be beyond my budget.

Yes, those were! Too bad they've sold, though.

But, anyway, if those popped up, then surely more of them must!

Keep me informed!

Sure, I’ll let you know! Browsing through some of these Japanese sales sites, you’d be amazed what is up. Missed a 2400c/240 on the same site, sold for 5000 yen (45.85 usd):

There are proxy buyers for Mercari, but I’ve never used any of them. I’m curious to try them out tho...

Thank you! I’ve actually found the disk images for Mac OS 8.0 floppies, but I appreciate it. I’m a collector, and I’m actually looking for the official disk distribution of Mac OS 8.0 on floppies. They are very rare. The last set I know of sold here:

http://oldapplestuff.com/installsoftware.html

As Apple was phasing out floppy disk distribution, you usually had to inquire through Apple for those floppy disks. That last set was listed for 95.00 usd, and sold to someone in Australia, according to the site operator.

Now, if you can find me an official Mac OS 8.0 on official floppies, you might be my new best friend ;)

Nope, no Japanese! I ran into Mercari not long ago searching for a complete 550c. Apparently, there is a US branch as well. From what I’ve read about it, it’s basically a fast way of selling your stuff, it’s an app-based selling proxy. And low fees, too. I use Google Translate to read the seller/buyer conversations, as they are public and passive.

It’s an app-based selling proxy where you snap a photo of your product and list it like eBay! Problem is, from the author of the article I’ve read, that means a lot of these sellers may not be experienced selling online.

I use FromJapan for Yahoo! Auctions. There are definitely a few more options, but these guys have been great with me, so far! (Except with the first PCMCIA Module I bought, took over a week for them to mark as “Received”...buy it got here, finally).

Wow, Mercari... (going off topic)

Here's a Color Classic II for 5000 yen in Kyoto-fu...

https://item.mercari.com/jp/m42424118192/

There are some interesting finds :)

i didnt translate through the descr of the listing you found, but I couldn’t find a “II” on the front nameplate, which concerns me. Would be a nice deal if it’s a true CC II and still works, compared to what I’ve seen from previous sales.

There were a couple Color Classic II Macs on Yahoo! Auctions recently, one complete in box with lit and softwares. That one sold for north of 500usd.

If if I hadn’t spotted the 550c w/ box last week, I probably would have put in toward a CC II. The whole week has been a torture waiting for the last min of that auction :)

Small pre-weekend update. Finally got around to snapping some shots of my 2100. And..I found Mac OS 8.1! My 550c computers have reached US soil, and one just delivered yesterday. But it's 1.25hrs away at my parents, and the other just reached Little Rock today. That will be my weekend project. Feels like forever ago. I'm also expecting a few more items shipping from overseas, so I will update on a rolling basis. This business is becoming a giant sink hole in my wallet :-/

So, here is the Apple Newton MessagePad 2100. Seller on eBay originally listed for 249 plus 15.25 shipping, I shot him a Best Offer of 190 and he smacked me back across the face with a counter for 220 plus shipping. Suffice to say, I took the bait, but not before I snickered... "I would have paid 249... ;)" Probably.

IMG_4597.thumb.JPG.f041fa1e023c847f909cc6910097921f.JPG

Happened across this keyboard for 39 plus 14.50 shipping. It's used, but I haven't even used it, yet.

IMG_4602.thumb.JPG.7283707c5b5d1c462751873aa279773d.JPG

Finally, here is Mac OS 8.1. I looked up Mac OS 8 last week and, at first, thought it was just another 8.0 listing. When I looked up 8.1, I saw this pop up again and was confused...briefly. Then I franticly clicked it, and checked it. Double checked it. Triple checked it. Slapped myself a couple times to make sure I was seeing the 8."1" correctly. Must have clicked the Buy It Now button at least twice. 16.99 shipped.

IMG_4605.thumb.JPG.013ffd0793ec9e110e2b5a7179d8e139.JPG

It's just the disc and manual, and I've seen it, even complete, sell for even less. But I'm glad I got my copy secured. Now, I can jump straight to 8.1 instead of go through 8.0 if I ever have to do clean installs. And...well, it's an official copy in my Mac library :)

That's a fair price for a boxed 2100.

I have a couple of those OS 8.1 manuals/disks.

You're still missing the two floppies that came with the package, not that you need them, unless you're a completionist. :)

Gracias! I haven't seen the 2100 complete with box very often, and when I have in the past, I wasn't a serious collector. The iPad Air still seems a little better for games... ;)

True true, I see disks pop up from time to time on the eBay, but for near the same price as I paid for just this disc and manual. I assume they're the same disks that come with 8.0? I eventually want to get those disks...but in a complete set. My hunt for 8.1 isn't entirely over. But I'm not so desperate for a disc anymore ;)

That, and my 500 series seem to "eat" floppy disks. When I prepare a startup disk image on a blank floppy, it works, but only for the first or second session. I have to keep rewriting the image on the same disks after each use because the 550 seems to "corrupt" the image after a use. Strange behavior...

It's nice you have a couple copies! They don't seem to turn up very often
