yikes G4 question

often when I plug in my yikes G4, it trips the breaker causing my fire alarm to be set off. is this a cause of concern?

No.

A 7500 PSU will not work with that G4. Same situation as with the G3. ATX is the way.(though you do have to snip and isolate the -5v and only the -5v).

7500 PSU does not fit in Yikes G4 at all. I know. Why does G4 randomly trip circuit breaker at the time of plug in? Strange it is.

That sounds like one of the flaws the MDD PSUs developed. One of the thermistors in it fails and causes the trip. I got a faulty MDD a while ago and just connecting the plug blew it's fuse. I didn't even get as far as trying to turn it on.

just now the G4 ticked when putting it to sleep, then ticked again when I woke it up. i cannot repeat this phenomenon at will.

an update. have not experienced any ticking since. just tripped breaker again. going to the basement to flip a switch is not really a huge inconvenience. should i just get used to doing that?

You have a choice: either risk your entire home's electrical grid by a faulty power supply, and ultimately your own safety by keeping it going;

OR, replace the power supply unit and DO NOT USE it until then. Throw out the power supply, if you are that tempted to turn it on until you can find a replacement. It won't improve nor can be fixed through simple means, and at worst could cause a fire.

In the nicest possible way, are you just trolling or are you seriously this idiotic? :) I apologise I never enter into this sort of stuff, but this is getting tiresome.

um the same thing that causes any circuit breaker to trip your drawing too much load though it and it shutting down that part to keep your house from burning down

you have a faulty power supply, why? I dunno let me look into my crystal ball, oh cause its broken

power supplies are somewhat tricky dangerous things to work with, I wont even attempt to repair one (and I helped design the ones we use in our products at work) its often so much easier wiser and safer to just replace the unit

Sean: Thanks for look in your crystal ball.

One of the times I unplugged my G4 today, the circuit did not break. That gives me hope. Maybe just keep a fire extinguisher near it? Good ideas?

The issue seems to have stopped as of now. Will it come back? Who know. I guess a new PSU is not in orders just yet. Right?…

not likely but replace the cord if it makes you feel better, if I had my guess something is dead or quickly dying, could be silicon, could be a capacitor, if your not grasping the basic function of a circuit breaker I dont suggest you go poking around something connected to current strong enough to weld plate steel while boiling water, drying your clothes and putting out hundreds of watts of light with plenty to spare

if your in the USA your breaker is probably 15 amps with 110-130 volts behind that, its enough to make a coat hanger melt, replace the power supply

you repeatedly said its intermittent, and I assume your not setting this thing on a ceiling fan so its in constant motion

whatever I am not trying to be a mind reader for people that can not explain what is happening when they need help

good luck

I think the basic translation is "The thing may burn your house down, it might not, but what it's doing is un-diagnose-able from afar and indicative of a potentially serious problem. So if you refuse to accept "change out the power supply" as an acceptable course of action then there's little anyone can say here that can help you."

I suppose the only way you'll ever *know* if it will burn down your house and kill your whole family is to keep doing what you're doing.

Edit:

In all fairness I did once actually encounter a worn power cord that was shorting if even just slightly jiggled. If the machine *never does it again* after swapping the cord then perhaps you found the problem.

I did experiment yesterday. Unplugged and replugged G4 with original green rainbow cord many times to test. It broke circuit. I did the same with a different power cord, and the circuit never broke. It not safe to assume that it will not burn the house down?
