So that narrows the possible 68020 linux installs: the Macintosh II only with MMU installed.

So this card is prime for the LC-II, but then again you would probably want a NIC card, so i suppose you would still

put this card aside and just use a NIC /w FPU installed.

Unless you were using SCSI or LocalTalk for networking. not sure how well those options are supported in the available linux distros.

I've been trying for a while to get a Linux running on a full floating '030 and have had no luck. Hats off to you if you can manage it on an '020.

Is it not from an overclocked LC? (If the previous user overclocked the CPU, they probably did the FPU as well. Also explains why the crystal's so skew on the board-poor soldering tecniques.)

Or else it was to offer an alternative way of upgrading the LC III (you could either use the socket or the card)?

I'll second that it's amazing just how un-findable photos of a genuine Classic II FPU upgrade are.

That mostly has to do with just how unfindable actual Classic II FPU upgrade boards are. (read: very)
