The M0001 Registry

From passing remarks in the courses of their posts, I should guess that there are other enlisted, eg tomlee59, who use their Plusses often. Fear not. You are probably not alone ...

Ah... I have a plus in regular use. I just never realized it was a M0001 which I thought was 128K and 512K only. Succumb to my powers of observation!

I will proudly add it to the register when I get home.

Nathan

I must admit that I haven't yet registered my two 512's in part because we cannot edit info in the database ourselves, so I feel the need to jot down ALL the relevant details (data for all columns) before I register so I won't need to bother Mac128 multiple times to update my machine's info.

With that said, I have a couple thoughts/suggestions:

1) Very few people are including their email addresses. I suspect this is due to the fact that SPAM spiders would easily grab such information. Would it not therefore be prudent to at least require people to write out their email addresses (e.g., steve at apple dot com versus steve@apple.com)?

2) Hardly anyone is posting a Link. I think this is unfortunate because everyone technically can post a link to something relevant. I personally would like to see links to photos of the machines, which can freely be posted on Flickr or Picasa or .Mac or other photo hosting sites. So my suggestion here would be to add some addition text on the registry page to encourage people to either post their personal homepage/blog link OR post a link to the photos of the machine. While raw data isn't bad, it really adds something when you have a nice crisp photo to go along with the data. And no, I don't think hundreds of photos of similar looking machines would be "boring" either.

Finally, please note that my words above are in no way criticism of the site. Mac128 put a lot of hard work into this and is to be commended for it. I have just posted some "thoughts" for everyone to chew on.

All excellent ideas JDW. I will amend the instruction page when I have a chance. I still have a detailed help page to put together complete with pictures as well ... oh, but could I stop time.

As I have said many times, the page is far from complete, comprehensive or perfect and it's really the Mac community that should decide what's on it beyond the basics. And eventually I will turn over "the keys" to someone else to drive I'm sure. It actually wasn't that hard to throw together ... improving upon the basic elements is hard.

I wish that baseportal allowed editing the way this forum does, but even with registration, I don't think members are limited to just the entries they posted. So you are going about it the right way JDW. I have in no way entered all the eligible serial numbers in my collection for the very reason I want to collect all the data I can before I post as well.

I'll try to make the M0001 models clearer. It's actually interesting when you look at the Plus that way since it really is nothing more than a 128K with the Dove after-market RAM & SCSI boards built-into the logicboard. In that sense, Jobs really did create a computer that could be easily upgraded from 128K to 4MB by simply swapping logicboards if nothing else. And if you look at it that way, the original Macintosh was offered basically for 7 years, longer than any other model in the line. Truly worthy of preservation.

How come the three I entered haven't shown up on the list yet?
Wow! That's a new one ... baseportal is a real-time database, which means they show up the minute you click submit. If the entry does not show up as the last entry on the database, then there's a problem. Double check by sorting the Serial Number field to see if your serial numbers are there. You may have to go to the second page as there are over 40 entries at this point. If not, please report back with the serial numbers and browser/version you are using and I'll look into it.

I've not had any problems with baseportal, but that doesn't mean it isn't flawless.

Quadraman, just let me know the full serial number and I will be happy to correct it. That's the main thing each entry needs to get correct. duplicate entries to add additional information are fine as long as they sort to match the first entry's serial number.

Good to hear it's working. I'll clarify the additional pages (20 entries per page)

Also, when I back it up, I will add a link to the resulting spreadsheet data so anyone can download it and put it into their favorite database program.
Undoubtedly that projected backup happened, but it occurs to me that, since FileMaker (unqualified with number or 'Pro') ran excellently well on the Plus at least, that that DB would be a grouse tool for this purpose, both as to its sortability and flexibility.

Are the present data downloadable? I'm minded to try FM as a container for what has been contributed to date.

Yes, equill, the backups have been there from early on. There is a link in the upper left corner marked "Download Last Databse Backup.csv"

As the title indicates, it is in a .csv format since most databases know how to deal with importing a .csv file and it is the default output of BasePortal. It should import into almost any version of FM easily, but let me know.

I just wish there were more entries for you to sort! Particularly of those rare freaks like the Platinum 512Ke! But I am one to talk as I have not catalogued all of my M0001's either ...

Just thought I would resurrect this old thread. I've just been looking at the M0001 registry again and it seems that most of the later registrations are spam, with adverts for drugs etc. Any chance that these could be removed, because they kind of bring down this otherwise excellent database?

*sigh*

I know. I just discovered this myself on Saturday. I removed about 200 SPAM entries, only to find last night that 150 new ones had appeared.

The BasePortal discussion boards indicates a problem with SPAM back in February, which didn't seem to affect M0001, and how the SPAM filters weren't handling it. It looks like it caught up with M0001 or this is yet some new diabolical SPAM robot in the ever evolving nefarious plot to ruin the internet for the rest of us by sleazy merchants who count on the low IQ of the masses for their existence.

Unfortunately it is not easy to delete an entry, for obvious reasons. However, unless they figure out a way to stop this kind of SPAM, an easier way to remove it is in order. I may have to move it to another link the SPAM robots haven't found but this will be transparent for most. If that doesn't work, then it may have to be suspended and I may have to take manual submissions, or require registration to BasePortal, which may or may not stop the SPAM and might deter someone from entering their info freely.

It's always something.

It's unlucky really, I myself administered an online discussion forum for a while and the number of bogus registrations it received was unbelievable. Fortunately I had it set up so that I had to personally approve registration before someone could post, which was a good way to snare the robots as they were nearly always easy to identify.

Think I figured out a simple work around to the spam. Since I am archiving it anyway, it means some additional routine maintenance. So keep registering those Macs!

P.S. Anyone who has registered a Mac, double check it is still on the list. I don't think I lost any but you never know.

Hi,

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I just noticed that http://www.mac128.com/m0001 no longer responds. I wanted to add my latest conquest, a good looking (though not booting) original Macintosh.

It looks like mac128.com was/is hosted on MobileMe, which is going bye-bye… Mac128, any plans to host it elsewhere?

No necromancy, that's why this thread is here, for periodic updates.

Have no idea what happened. I think it had something to do with changes Apple made to iWeb, and simultaneous cancellation of services of my old ISP web-disk space this Summer.

But fixed now. (I think). God knows what's going to happen when iCloud goes into effect this Fall, but I'll keep my eye on it. Still trying to figure out the old Apple "homepage" websites when they moved to dot mac ...

Thanks for being diligent and maintaining the database!!

Wow, thanks for addressing the issue so quick!

I don't know what God really knows… But Apple makes it pretty clear:

What happens to the iWeb sites that I’ve published to MobileMe?You will be able to continue publishing iWeb sites to MobileMe through June 30, 2012, even after moving to iCloud. With iWeb you can easily move a site published to MobileMe to another web hosting service and you should do so before that date. Please read this article for details.
Looks like you'll have to look for another host, and maybe another publishing tool! 8-)
