stupid logic board failure

So my G3 800 iBook's logic board bought the farm the other day. This is the second one it's had, too. Of course Apple's repair program has long ended, so now I have a scratched, white paper weight [!] !]'> I was quoted $420 to have the stupid thing repaired [!] !]'>

I pulled the RAM and AirPort card and stuck them in my TiBook. Waste not want not.

If you have nothing to lose, might as well try the "home BGA reflow" procedure. Get yourself a heat gun and some bourbon (ok, sake will do). The drink's for you, the heat gun's for the logic board.

If yours is also the GPU's departure from this hateful existence, or at least a letting go from the MLB, find trag's post here about using modelling clay to protect adjacent components while you reflow the solder of the GPU.

I thought about turning it into a headless server. Chuck a flavor of Linux on it, a DynDNS client and I'd be all set. They are noiseless and don't produce much heat.

No thank you. My first iBook was that model. It currently has a busted CD drive and broken DC-in board. I was quote $500 in having that repaired so it's now in retirement back in the US.

If it makes you feel any better, all but one of the iceBooks I've purchased from eBay had no less than three replacement Ethernet ID stickers under the keyboard, while some have had more.

The 500-700MHz models are the easiest to reflow, with the 800-900MHz models being more difficult due to the use of discrete RAM chips mounted to the GPU's package (previous models' RAM was integrated into the GPU itself). I've succeeded with the heat gun trick on three of the discrete RAM models, but two were ruined when the weight of the RAM chips crushed their solder out from underneath them. That was a disappointing experience both times.
