Se hard drive fix

Picked up a couple of SE's on the weekend. Both had 20 meg drives. If they are not showing up or they fixable? or just a write off??

What manufacturer? If they're Miniscribes, they may need to have their head stepper motors relubricated. Quantums may need sticky rubber bumpers dealt with. There's always a chance, but they might just be fried.

Huh, I didn't know that SEs ever shipped with Seagate drives. The ST-157n may be fixable via lubricating the stepper motor. I believe it is on the bottom of the drive on that model.

That's certainly possible. I'd try lubricating the stepper motors on both drives to see if it will bring them back, they may not be recognized due to not being able to complete their self-test.

The stepper motor on the miniscribe should be on the bottom right side, a little rod sticking out. The seagate drive has a rod on the bottom, flush with the body of the drive. You probably should use some sort of specialized small motor lubricant instead of WD40, but I'm not sure exactly of the stuff to use. Here's a useful video on the topic:

ok cool. Will let it sit for a bit. Think the platters maybe stuck by the sounds of it. Thanks for the help though, appreciate it!
