SE/30 have I bought a dud?

I've seen a few bad boards online when I was looking to buy my SE/30 and yours isn't looking half as bad, how much knowledge you have with boards and stuff?

There's perhaps hope then, I have pretty much no knowledge with boards and stuff my skills go as far as building a few pcs. So I certainly won't be attempting any more on this myself really, I don't trust myself. I would really like to get it working though it's staring at me!

Same here Dan, I used to build a few pc's 10 years ago and I've fixed some laptops for friends ie change a fan or screen that's it, I'm more software than hardware, I used to do it support again 10 years ago, I'm now an analyst so produce figures/reports and this is just a hobby I've wanted to do for a while as I love these old macs they had then at art college, you're not near the Midlands are you?

I mentioned I'm sending mine to be recapped and checked by Charles at macaps, recap and postage to the states and back is about £70, admittedly yours may set you back £120 but you only paid £90 so I think it's worth it

Yeah I've done bits like that too, I'm more mechanical then electronics ex mechanical engineer truck driver now though, but I do love tech especially the old stuff. I never had a mac but back in college I used to use them in graphic design, I'm sure we used to use colour classics at some point too I would like to get one of those eventually. Modern wise though although it may be sacrilege on this site I have no interest in modern apple products.

I'm over in lincolnshire. I'm guessing the cost of your repair is nearly as much as the postage though.

No way my sister is a truck driver as well. I went to Worcester art college (graphic design) and used macs there LC's, IIfx and got my old man to get me my own in the 2nd year which was a colour classic with style writer printer, it was a close call for me getting a colour classic again or the SE/30 but decided on th SE/30 as its more tuneable, that said (be it with rose tinted glasses) the CC's 10 inch Sony trinitron screen was amazing, beautifully vivid and in a different League to the b&w screens. I'm an analyst now and sit at work with 2 24inch screens and think back to my days on the CC and can't believe I actually managed to do photoshop & illustrator on that little screen, fond memories though wish I'd never sold it. That said I've read people can put performa 570 boards in the cc as they kind of fit (bar the plastic cover as ports were in different places) so in theory you can put PowerPC innards in a CC.

As for the board the pricing and postage to madcap really isn't as bad as I though, postage about £35 return from the states (just board), recap and clean was about £50 and I'm considering sending the power supply as well which is only about £15 to recap but will add an extra £15 to postage due to the weight

Here's mine on (see pic) Max1zzz has just about every piece of software ever available, he's being good enough to pop a load or software on my hard drive if I send it to him which I'll do when I open it to take the board out (still haven't taken it apart yet)image.jpg
